I don't want to open a can of worms, I just need some good opinions  ;D

I'm thinking of selling most of my hand gun stock (shhhh yes the other brand in 44) and getting me a good pair of colt conversions. I will keep one C & B for just between the end of the civil war and about 1870 or so. These guns will be used in a Wild west show,and historical reenactments with blanks and most likely on the farm either on horseback or on the tractor and 4wheeler for varment protection.

This being said the caliber will be either .45 lc (because I have the reloading equipment, or .38special because of the ease of getting cheap .38 ammo and getting a lee .38 handloader.

What is a better choice in your opinion, a navy 38 conversion, an 1860 army conversion or an 1872 open top? Or is there really no difference than just preference?

I'm looking for dependability and few or no problems from the box.

Thanks,
CH

CH;
Next time we get together your welcome to try my '60 R&M's, they're not .45's or .38's but you can get the feel of them.

I appreciate that JW, I'm settling on just getting me a brace of something the same and down the road trading around for a henry, then I'll be done....(until the next time)  ::)

Very little difference in the Ubertis.  I've owned Richards-Masons in .44 spl, six pairs of of Cap and Ball revolvers in both .44 Army and .36 caliber Navy, .44 Spl Open Tops, .38 Spl open tops, and today I got word my new pair of Rchards Transition Models in .44 spl are in.  I have another conversions made by Armi San Marco as well but I'd stick with Ubertis if I were you.

Get what you like. The Open Tops have a shorter hammer cock otherwise they are all very similar.  You need to choose between Army or Navy grips that makes a portion of your decision. Personally I think the .45 case is too large of a diameter for the cylinder wall thickness. My daughter is shooting the .38 spl Open Tops now, those two have Navy grips and it fits her smaller hands and the shorter hammer stroke suits her.  I am going to get some shorter barrels or have the 7 1/2 barrels bobbed for her.

The Uberti conversions all have the two stage hand and some of the parts are interchangeable, so find what you like, feels good and is at a good price just dive in.

Thanks MAKO, that's the kind of info I needed. I went to a few gun shops in my area that ALWAYS carry some type of colt repro conversion and they both stopped carrying them, Lil Biff's and Knob Creek Gun Range. Biff isn't carrying ANY single actions now except ruger and Knob Creek (who actually sponsers a SASS shoot) had shelves full of Taurus Gauchos but nothing else. Seemed like they both talked around getting any Uberti's in. Biff's said not in the forseeable future and the other just skirted the question.

Of course I was wanting to handle something before talking some trades and money..no luck.

I bought mine from Traditional Effects when they were still in buisness about the time Cimarron started selling them and haven't had any trouble with them.
I'm thinking of getting another pair of either the R&M's or '72's in .44 Colt with 5 1/2' barrels. I'm in the same boat as I need to sell my Remington's to help fund them.
I really like the .44 Colt round. My R&M's have been reamed to .44Spl mostly just to help out on the OAL so I can run the same rounds thru my '66 Winchester easier.
