Sir Charles deMouton-Black

December 4th is the saints day of Saint BARBARA.

She is the patron saint of gunners, blacksmiths and explosive workers.

The way I read it, that includes a whole bunch of SOOT LORDS!

IIRC from my Army days, St Barbara is the Patron Saint of the Artillery (gunners, explosive workers).  There is a group trying to make St Gabriel Possenti the Parton Saint of gunowners.

Ah, yes. I remember it well. St Barbara's Day, Artillery Punch and the oath. By the way, not to indicate that artillerymen are hard drinkers but, the original recipe for Artillery Punch starts with 50 gals of black tea. All other ingredients are measured by the sack or barrel.

I also have some fond but very vague memories of copius quantities of French 75s.

I am an associate member of an reserve artillery regiment in Victoria BC.  Last night I attended the Saint Barbara mess dinner.  Guests were present from the 2-146 Artillery regiment of the Washington State National Guard. This is part of a growing relationship between the two units.

On the table where I was seated there was a silver cup awarded a century ago to the most efficient company in our regiment, which was tasked with coastal defence at the time.  The most frequent recipient was the company commanded by Captain A.W. Currie.

Yes, the same fellow that commanded the Canadian Corps in WWI, and was scheduled to become a Field Marshal in 1919 to command all Imperial forces, if the war lasted that long.

UBIQUE!

The Field Artillery Association of the US Army awards St Barbara's Medals to deserving Soldiers and Officers.  It has been several years since I attended a St Barbara's Dining Out, but all were lots of fun.  And yes the punch is potent.  I spent 15yrs in 2-157th FA which was an 8" unit at the time.

Just the thought of a St. Barbara's party makes my head hurt.

French 75s and Artillery Punch are questionable for human consumption.

I had a great time at the last St. Barbara's Artillery party I attended.  I must have, I don't remember anything that happened after the award ceremony.  Sgt. Bob

Today is the day that we commemorate her sainthood.
