So we're saying that Wild Bill Hickock was "The Prince Of Revolvereers"?

Sorry, that just doesn't sing.   ;D

Now, I could get myself in all sorts of trouble here, but when did you ex-colonials ever start speaking correct English??? ;D ::)

Ok, now that we got that whole pistol or revolver thing settled   ;) and the weapon thing discussed (Jefro has it right at least in the courses I teach) weapon is the term used in NRA Personal Protection in the Home and Personal Protection Outside the Home and any one of the tactical courses I teach. Handgun, rifle or shotgun is used exclusively in the rest.

Now could we please move on to much more important question: the correct use of the terms magazine and clip for those pistols?  ;)

No, this has nothing to do with Evil Roy.

Take care.

According to an obscure little group called the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA):

PISTOL -- Synonymous with "handgun." A gun that is generally held in one hand. It may be of the single-shot, multi-barrel, repeating or semi-automatic variety and includes revolvers.

Well Camile, To answer you first, I put it here to do just what the results show. To see what others thought and to have a little fun by starting a "FUN" and  controversial subject. I will always try to have a little fun as life is to short to be that serious. If anyone here thinks that I lost sleep over this then they don't know me. Come to think about it, they don't do they? When I was a cop the group of guys I worked with in Narcotics Division for 6 years would not let a day go by without funning with some one. Now did I hear someone say something about the difference between a clip and magazine?

Well as far as clips and magazines, myself, I've never had trouble tellin' the differance. ::)

This bein' a clip:

And this bein' a magazine:

Well pard, over on my Labrador Retriver forum, got a friend who's teachin' me to talk like a English Country Gentleman and I'm teachin' him to talk like a man from the Great Plains of the US.  I must say I 'm the better teacher. ;D

Did open the bonnet on my lorry today and checked under it. :)

Humble pie is easy, just take a bunch a innards and cook them in a pie crust.  But I must warn you, it's a offal meal. ::)

Here goes!

A magazine is what holds the rounds of ammunition and is placed into the grip of a semi-automatic pistol, or the action of a rifle or machine gun.

A clip is a little harder to concisely define.

A stripper clip holds rounds of ammunition and allows them to be rapidly loaded in a magazine such as in a Mauser type bolt action rifle.

A clip also holds rounds and can be inserted into a firearm, such as the 8 round clip into an M1 Garand and also a half moon clip that is used with the Mod. 1917 Service revolver, made by either Colt or Smith & Wesson.  I believe that there are other examples of these types of clips.

There may be more, but these are the most common.

BTW Del,

Yep, then there is a stripper clip designed to load a detachable magazine, as used to load the M16 (and they suck)

Naw, you Brits have enough trouble thinking "gun" means a smoothbore designed to throw a handful of shot at one time.....that and driving on the wrong side of the road and warm beer.  You don't need any more grief.   ;D

Well I thought it was what I plug my phone into at night. ;D

Durn English, they are a fault here, they gave us this dang language where one one word can mean several things.  And no, don't think they all speak it the same way even on the island.  My country gentlemen friend says he can't hardly understand anyone from East London. ::)

And Dr. Bob, the real reason is I watched a lot of Monty Python, Fawltey Towers, Are You Being Served and others of the like.  He ain't seen many westerns. ;D
