On British Militaria Forums I have posted about 30 or so rather
interesting engravings related to competitive rifle shooting
originally published in the Illustrated London News from 1860 through
1897 - the very heyday of the activity among Rifle Volunteers and many
others ....

(These are posted in the form of thumbnail links to the larger images,
so  this page shouldn't take an eon to open ....)

If interested, here is the link ....

Shabash, RJR, Shabash!
Really enjoyed the pics, especially the one called 'Sham charge of Hussars and Lancers'. They obviously had a great deal of fun at these events and made it worthwhile to attend. Are there any of the berms or buildings left or have they all gone the way of the other Long Range sites such as Creedmoor on Long Island east of New York City?
Best regards and thanks for sharing!

I can't say about the Wimbledon Range, but maybe some of our UK members will know.  It was last used by the UK NRA in 1889, I believe, and has likely long since succumbed to development I'd guess.
Maybe tennis courts, now!?!?  ;)

In 1890, the NRA moved to its new shooting facility at Bisley.  The engraving of Princess Alexandra "firing the first shot" was from the opening of the Imperial Shoot that year.

The Bisley facility remains very much in use to the present day!

Here are some photos posted on their website, taken the 2008 Imperial Meeting.
Some of the old pomp and ceremony remains, but as you can see other things are rather "changed" .....
