Realistic .50-95 accuracy with Uberti/Chappy 1876s?

I've been reading through the archives of this forum and seen posts from quite a few Uberti/Chappy .50-95 owners on various topics.  But I've seen almost nothing about their accuracy.  Accuracy of the .45-75 has been documented far better. If you have a .50-95 please tell me about your shooting experience and accuracy.  I'm really interesting in black powder loads, but welcome information on any loads you have used.

I've read general comments that the .50-95 is not as accurate as the other calibers and I'm not surprised.  But I did read elsewhere on the net (can't remember exactly where now) that a fellow was getting groups under 1" at 50 yards.  But no other details were provided.

I'm planning to go to Taylors next week to pick out a rifle, and am still undecided on caliber - .45-75 or .50-95.

.50-95 owners please chime in!
Thanks,
Steve

Has NOBODY shot a .50-95 yet or are folks just a little bashful to talk about it?  ???

hi,i own a uberti 1876 in 50-95 and i love it. i hunted in montana with it this year with great success, mule deer buck 4x3,has a very unusual  rack, i saw him with 3 other buck at 503 yds. stocked for over an hour and killed him with 1 shot threw both lunges @ 101yds.he ran 30 yds and skided in. dead before i could get to him. i give credit to buffulo arms for the great ammo they have worked up for the 50-95 uberti (300 gr.bp),and the sights, front globe(LS17625375),i bought from baco,rear(5AW)from riflesmith. i truly believe in this setup.  i will be using here in pa in a few weeks. if you would like to talk i will pm my cell# as soon as i send this.

Howdy! I have the Chaparral in .50-95 with the 28" barrel, and shooting the Lyman 515139 330 grainer, it shoots 2 to 3 inches at 50 yds, and my best group to date at 100 yds was a five shot 4 1/2" group. Thats with the factory front sight, and an old Winchester buckhorn that I replaced the ladder sight with. I can hit a 14" steel plate damn near every shot offhand with those lead bowling balls, so I'd say if it was an elk or African lion, it would be a hurtin' unit!!

Thats pretty darn good accuracy with barrel sights, I'm glad to hear it.   What powder/primers are you using?  As soon as I get my loading supplies from Buffalo Arms, I'll be able to shot mine. I'm going to start with their ammo loaded with Swiss BP.  I'll then reload it, using Goex FG or Cartridge grade.

My eyes don't do so well with barrel sights anymore.  So I'm looking at a Riflesmoth tang sight to provide a good sight picture.

The load Ive settled on for my Chappy is 46 grns.(weight not volume) Hodgdon Triple 7 with a CCI 200 primer. Thats using that 330 grain Lyman #515390 cast bullet. Good luck with your .50, its a fun cartridge!

Realistic accuracy?  How about this...with iron sights at 200 yards, with a steady cross-wind, I can, CONSISTENTLY, shoot a 1/2" group.  Every time.  How do ya like them apples?   ;D

Yeah, those one shot groups do make for very consistent results  ;)

Mossyrock, I dont think them big chunks of lead can make it out to 200 yds.!!!

Don't be so sure of that.  If I can ring a 12" gong with my 56-50 Spencer, what makes you thing the 50-95 isn't capable of the same thing?  With practice, you will be amazed at how consistent you can get at longer distances....

And how can you shoot a 1/2" group with a .515 bullet anyways!! Mossyrock, you are a pretty clever fella!!!

OK, half inch, more or less....

I may be pulling your leg on the half inch group, but I am serious about the 200 yards.  Don't sell that pumpkin-slinger short.  It WILL shoot out to 200 yards, and go through any deer ever born at that distance.

I was jestin bout that failing to make it out 200 yds. If you played the trajectory right, at 1500 fps with a 340 grn. bullet, you could anchor a deer out past 350. Thats a chunk of lead its throwing. Just a thought.
