Replacement rear sights

Let's start with the Henry and see if we can come up with barrel-mounted rear sights that have are pretty much identical buckhorns for the Henry, 66, 73, 76, 86, 92, 94, and 95 Winchesters (all but one are clones).  I want something that looks like it belongs on the guns, but I want close to the same sight picture on every one.  I'll work on front sights later.

I like the Winchester / Marble style sliding elevator sights, but I'm open to others.

Bring on the suggestions and pros and cons.

Thanks.

I've used tang sights and various peeps all my life (Marbles and Lyman, M-1 Garand and carbine, M-14, M-16, etc) and like them a lot, but I want to replace the stock sights with something more substantial and with the full buck style "wings".

I just can't get used to picking up one of my rifles and having to get used to the sights...even for a split second...before I can fire.

I'll probably go with grabber front sights.

I have this sight on both my Henry and my 66.  http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(wmsjg055fxeciwbx2waefw45))/categories/partDetail.aspx?catId=14&subId=167&styleId=764&partNum=RS-PM-1

It is a Hawken type sight so it easily could have been put on a early Winchester.  However the only b
full buckhorns I find in the Madis book are for the 92 and 94.

The sight Will refers to here is one of the few that you will get to fit between the dovetail and the receiver of the Henry (at least mounted correctly) as the dovetail is too far back on the barrel for most of the traditional Rifle type sights. I have this sight on my Henry Trapper and after I opened up the notch it works super. If I correctly recall they have many versions of that sight from plain to full buckhorn. It would obviously fit and work well on all of your rifles. Decently priced too!

Good luck on ya!

Forty Rod,

Nate Kiowa Jones of Stevesgunz, has a rather nice buckhorn available.  It should work on ALL Uberti and the other Italian copies that all use a 3/8 dovetail.
I also like that Track of the Wolf sight and have installed it for some customers.  I personally prefer a flat sight so the Henry ladder rear sight is a natural for me.
I can't recommend the "Grabber" front sight highly enough.  Manatee has THE winner there.  I like the mid size bead but have also installed the "bigun" on guns fro some of my more "seasoned" customers.  The bigun resembles a DOOR KNOB and it sure is visible.

Wonder where I put the one I pulled off my Great Plains rifle.

Do I need to modify the dovetails to use them?

Not that I recall.  I might have had to file the male dovetail on one of them. ???  They are made to fit a 3/8 dovetail if I remember right.

Forty Rod, a friend of mine asked me what a full buckhorn sight looked like so I drew him a rough sketch.
A week later he proudly showed off a 3/8 steel washer, slotted at the top and welded to his '94 rear sight.
Suffice it to say, I ain't drawing nothing for nobody any more!!

I too have the sight Will refers to on my Henry. These photos are a little bit washed out, but you get the idea.

The dovetail on the barrel of a Henry is much too close to the frame to allow mounting most sights in a conventional manner. In order to mount a conventional Marbles rear sight on a Henry you have to mount it backwards, which I have seen done. At least that way, the sight picture would be the same, if one chose to mount the same sight on all their rifles.

I did not have to do any filing to fit this sight to my Henry, in fact it was a little bit loose in the dovetail and I had to shim it to get it to stay secure.

I have to say, in truth, I do not believe the quality of this sight is quite up to the same standards as what Marbles produces. I have Marbles semi-buckhorn sights on several of my rifles, and the finish on them is superior to this sight. They are highly polished and blued. This sight appears to be a sand casting and still has a fine grained pebbled finish left behind by the sand underneath the blue. Then again, you pay a lot more for a Marbles sight.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Forty Rod

Looks like what I'm looking for.  I prefer a "duller" finish on my sights, so the sanded finish doesn't bother me a bit, and at the ranges I shoot I don't need any more accuracy than minute of dinner plate.

Thanks.

BTW, that looks good on your rifle.
