Capt. Texas Elliot

Not quite cowboy, bit earlier, but still one of my favourite pics. My wife managed to catch it just as the powder in the pan ignited.

Howdy Doody

Capt Elliot, that is awesome. Your horse is too. Dang if it looks real relaxed like. Great picture pard.  :)

Howdy Howdy,

All that horse is hearing at that particular moment is a quiet hiss!  The Boom is yet to come. :o  I doubt that the horse would mind the Boom observing how the Capt. is sitting.  It sure is a really neat picture! ;D

Well, you can do what you want Dr. Bob, but let me tell you a story and you will see why I might be a little shy with guns on a horse.

Well, I got on this horse, a beauty too, dark brown and nice saddle too. I was heeled, and as we started to trot off, I yanked my six shooter that was loaded with blanks and fired just once. That danged fool horse started into a gallop and ran and ran. I really felt it was all over for me and I saw my entire life pass in front on my eyes. I was unbelievably scared. I tried yanking the rains, tried to pull the danded fool horse to one side. I guess by this time I was yelling and screaming something awful, because the manager of the K Mart came running out of the store and yanked the cord and plug right out of the wall. You can bet I ain't about to let something like that happen again, nosiree Dr. Bob.

Black Powder

Hearing protection.  We are required to wear it and horses should to.  Presumably, the horse is wearing pom plugs.

And whadya mean, not quite cowboy?  You mean I should get rid of the feather boa in my hat?  Hell...

Great pic.

I've got my excuses and I'm stickin' to 'em.

Capt. Texas Elliot

Sure is. All our horses have plugs in when we shoot on or near them. Horses hearing is 10 times more sensitive than ours so plugs are a must.

Feather Boas are a nice touch.

Black Powder

Thanks, Capt.  Good to know.  I figured that Kevin Kline kissin' his horse in "Silverado" wasn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but this suburbanite feels better knowin' that those that know about them really do make sure they're taken care of.

I don't lay claim to this photo ... someone else took it.  It was taken (IF I remember correctly) at the US Cavalry Competition in 2007 or 2008 at Ft. Riley, KS.

I thought   that this photo MUST be about as awesome as possible ... until I found "the REST of the story," so to speak.

It seems that this was the final event of the evening, and they set this up for its' effect ... which is outstanding.  The balloons are filled with hydrogen.  As you can easily see, the horse is pretty impressed!
:o
It's STILL an awesome shot - even when you know how it was done!  It certainly takes BP to get the full effect!

Not quite!

Ft. Riley, Kansas.  Each summer they have a nationwide Cavalry Competition there.  Riding, shooting (both balloons as seen AND real ammo), Cavalry related formations and general horsemanship.  I think this photo was taken in June or July of '07 and it celebrated the 20th year of the Cav. Competition.  What's particularly bad about it is that I was STATIONED at Ft. Riley from Dec. '90 - Apr.'92 (well, a bunch of the time I was in the Big Sandbox  ::) so I wasn't actually THERE) but I was still there for a year or a little less AFTER the War, and I never heard a THING about it!

('Course, I didn't know Ft. Riley's history with the US Cavalry during the IW period, either, OR that the Museum there included what's called "the Custer House."  They point out that he and Libby didn't actually stay in THAT house, but it was something like two or 3 from their home.  Which burnt down near the turn of the Century.  But the home IS authentic to the period and has all the furnishings intact to the period.)

I'm not sure what ya mean, pard.

The Cavalry Competition is for Cavalry Re-Enactors, not the US Military.

But yes ... most of the horses that the US Military Cavalry has I think are at Ft. Riley.  That DOESN'T include the group that are referring to around the US Capitol, Pentagon, etc. - but those are mostly used at Arlington National Cemetery.  Heck, Rooster - YOU prob'ly know more about the US Army horses around that area than I do!  Yer a LOT closer to 'em than ME!
:o ;) ;) ;) ;)
