that I have been talking with Jerry and Steff, the land owner of the range for the GAF Muster and that we working, in conjunction with the GAF Grand Muster will be offering a full blown 8 stage Wild Bunch style match based on World War 1.  The title of the match is "Over There."

The dates are pretty firm and may fluctuate a little (by little the start day may be Monday, it may be Tuesday).  But, the match will require 1 lever action rifle or 1 military bolt rifle and 1 side arm that found service in World War 1.  So, that means, it could be a Double Action Revolver style 1917, a Webley or a p-08, 1911 or Mauser.....you get the point.  There will be a side match day that will consist of Long Range Bolt and Lever and Long Range Pistol.

So, dust off that K-98, Spingfield 03 or Enfield and come on up to Nebraska a few days earilier than you were going to for the GAF Muster and shoot "Over There" with us.  Since this is a seperate match with a seperate cost center, I will be creating an application for "Over There."

But, what other Action Shooting Match that you go to will have a fully automatic Lewis Gun written into the stages?  That's right boys and girls.  You will get to Rock and Roll on full auto during this match.  It will be legal and wrapped into the "Over There" match fee.

Awards will be earned for 3 deep in both Lever Rifle and Bolt Rifle class as well as Side Matches.  Steff has agreed to build medals that resemble the Croix de Guerre.  Folks, this is going to be unique and FUN.  Come on up to the GAF Muster a bit earlier than you were planning too....you won't regret it.

Questions?

This is a great idea.  Different than the movie based wild bunch match and yet similar.  When you get details let me now and I will try to get the word out around hear as much as I can.

So what exactly is the "firm" dates?
Is it the week of the Muster?
And is the Muster for sure the second weekend of Oct?

If so remember to take enough time off so you can shoot the Nebrasks state SASS Blackpowder championship (Smokless can shoot but the awards/rewards are smaller) the first weekend of Oct. at Grand Island NE.
You might want to get together with them (the Platte Vally Gunslingers) to promote also.

What about shotgun?  is one needed or are the stages going to be like the muster stages written without shotgun?  If shotgun is included may I suggest that they are all loaded on the clock weather pump, lever or double.  repeting shotguns could still load more than 2 at a time but it would put the pumps and doubles a bit more level.

Come to think about it, I have a 1909 Argentine Mauser myself.  That should be fine if that is the case.

Yeah, that was used by the Russian Army and then the Red Army the Mosin-Nagant is good to go.

So to avoid these types of questions going forward, if the rifle was in service between 1888 and 1920 and is a bolt rifle, it's good to go.  Also, good to go are similar varients of the aforementioned rifles.  For example, a Springfield 03A3 is fine.  I don't want to limit this.  So, we have the time frame for the rifle, make sure that the magazine can hold 5 AND the bolt can be home on an empty chamber.  If you have a bayonet, please bring it, if not, not a biggy we will ensure you have one provided.

If your rifle does not fit the timeframe mentioned, we can take it by a case by case basis.  Also, we are looking at having some hard corps WW1 reenactors there too.  I personally didn't know they had guys like that.  I will be dressed in my Wild Bunch outfits.  Something to consider.  I am not knowledgeable on British .303's to tell you which version is good.  I don't believe one model is going to give you a greater advantage over the other.  I don't have issue with any of them.  Same with the K-98.  I don't care if it's a WW1 model or a WW2 Model, or a Yugoslavian Model.

have you cnsidered if anyone would want to use somthing like a win' 94 in .30-30?  I think they wee used for gaurd duty on some bases hear at home.  Would the .30-30 (which can't hold10) shot against the pistol caliber levers oragainst the bolts?

Personaly,  I'm looking forward to another try with my 1917.
what are the specs for the rifle ammo?
CAS standards of lead bullets under 1400fps or can you allow jacketed faster ones?

Just giving you some what ifs.

The military stock has been sporterized but the rifle retains the military sights. I've also got an 8mm Turkish Mauser that is all original.

I think this is great idea...I was asking about the Mosin-Nagant because my friend has one and enjoys shooting it.
He is just now getting in to NCOWS, we are getting him equiped in BP etc.
and I have memtioned the Nationals.
Another NCOWS member here (we only have 4 of us ) mentioned car pooling to the Nationals
I have never been myself, and the Idea is gelling.

I'm not sure what era his Mosin-Nagant is,  may be post WW1  ( you have solved that issue )

I had a 03 Springfield sold it years ago  :-\ ...but I'd like to find another K98
a lot were snapped up in 1998 by the Span/Am reenactors
We bought out several wholesalers for props for "Rough Riders" I did not get to keep even one !  ::)

Major 2, I didn't know that you were in "Rough Riders".  I got to visit with my friend Buck Taylor Thursday night at the Stockyards. He is to be inducted into the Legend of the Trail over there. It's sorta like the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. I noticed an ad on the SASS forum for a Puma 92 in 45LC for 350.

I wonder if we haven't shot ourselves in the foot, so to speak, by trying to piggyback a separate multiple-day match with The Muster? In essence exchanged what was a long-weekend event into now thinking in terms of how to come up with a block of at least 8-10 vacation days late in the year. (Travel time factored in.)

As it is well beyond the GAF's Victorian reign end-date of 1904 it is an entirely different animal, and I wonder if it doesn't deserve to be made a stand alone event?
Sounds like a hoot to shoot, although I don't own any WW I era firearms.

Major Matt,

I like your idea of this match.  Scooter and I arrived at the Fort on Wednesday evening then toured the Fort on Thrursday and located the range ect, we did nothing else on Thursday.  Why not have the Wild Bunch on Thursday for those who wish to shoot it, then have the Long Range shooting on Friday like we did this year, so you would only be adding one more shooting day. If the Wild Bunch match runs into Friday morning so what, we shot Long Range and Wild Bunch 3 stage match in one day this year on Friday.
Here is a very good reason to purchase new weapons for this time period in our Countrys history, as if you need a reason to purchase new guns.

We need some Class 3 dealers that have some BAR's and some Browning 30 cal machine guns to really do it up right. However, count me out for the Mustard Gas attacks.

Well we have the class 3 guys.  That's how we're getting the   Lewis gun and Maxim.  Which is where Browning got his design.

Gents, remember that the Nebraska State SASS Blackpowder Shootout is Oct 3-4, 2009. It is in Grand Island, which isnt too far from Ord. Would make a heck of a 2 weekend, 3 match event, especially if you are traveling aways.
I am hoping to make it to the Muster this next year. Couldnt this year due to the aforementioned blackpowder shoot being the same weekend.
This wild bunch thing is interesting. I have a slew of Mosins, Enfields, and a 1903 dated to WW1.

Now a Mosin cant close on an empty with 5 in the mag tho. At least none of mine will that I know of.  Will that be a problem?

Will a Tanker model Enfield revolver, that is based on the Webley work? Has the bobbed hammer and all, and doesnt even look WW1 to me.

Probably best to avoid the Mosin Nagant if it can't close on a empty chamber with 5.  If you have something other than the revolver that you mentioned it may be better.  If you don't let me know.

Agreed on the Neb Blackpowder match.  I have heard nothing but great things about it.

Would that be one of the Turkish 1888 Commission rifles?

I still have the one I bought - AND the receipt for $27.88 - from Woolco back in the early/mid 70s!  I don't shoot full power ammo in it anymore  :o - but I used to.  Now it's been retired to lighter, gentler ammo.  ;)  I even have a full 5 round stripper clip I bought with it of the steel jacketed ammo they sold ... for $1.00/15 rnds.  It was quite a bargain.  Too bad we can't get bargains like that anymore!

(And yes, mine IS one of the "S" barrel re-cuts - I think done around 1905)
