Marshall and 10 Wolves, I am looking forward to your evaluation of the Henleys. I have the angled and straight thin blades. I like the whole set up much better than the basic Tandy knife, but I've not had an opportunity to try out any others.

Okay pards, newbie carving questions INCOMING!!

I bought a new swivel knife months back and I've never regretted spending the extra cash on a knife with bearings in the yoke as it's far far easier to handle. The large barrel is far more comfortable over long sessions as well.

Along with the new knife I bought a higher quality straight hollow ground blade along with a ceramic 1/4" angle blade and a ceramic beader blade. Problem is I am clueless as to how to properly sharpen them. I have a stick of white jewlers rouge as well as some paste type polishing compounds I can use (ranging from soft to hard for varying degrees of metal removal).

How do I go about properly utilizing the rouge and polishing compounds to really get my blades sharp and properly shaped? I have plenty of scrap leather I can use for stropping and I have the 3 sided sharpening block offered through Tandy's site.

Any help is appreciated as I am about to embark on an ambitious carving project tooling up some holsters and gun belts for my wife and I really want the floral carving to be spectacular.

Thanks.
See me takin' shots at the bar like I'm bullet-proof.

Seth, in this thread on page 2, reply number 18 by Chuck Burrows has a link to a site that explains how to strop and how to sharpen them.

Be sure to post pics for us to enjoy when you get some stuff done. :D

 Howdy Marshal Will and WC,

Well I got my Henley Swivel knife today, boy this is some knife, I got the 5/8" barrel with 2" body, med. knurl, saddle yoke with a 3/8" knife, man this is a nice knife, and the blade is as sharp as a lance, I also got the 5/16 " beader blade, I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like it will do the job with ease. Anyway I'm glade I went ahead and added this knife to my others, it will lesson my time changing blades out, I have four knives now which will make things more user friendly, guess I'm just getting lazy.

Thanks to both of you for your recommendation  ;) :D 8)

Cool, TW. Glad to share the blame help. If your blade is as sharp as mine, you'll be going for quite a while with only minor stropping. Let us know how you like the 5/8" barrel.

Will do Will, this blade is plenty sharp, and I can see that stropping will be all that's necessary for some time, WC recommended the larger barrel, because it is less fatiguing, and that rolled over saddle yoke is much more comfortable on the finger for me, I wasn't even aware that they made this type yoke, but I think it will be a big plus for me , with my bum hand.

That would be fantastic pard! I just got back from Tandy today on Sherman Way. Picked up concho's, lining leather, buckles, leather balm, some scrap wool etc to round of the rest of the supplies I needed for her 2 new belts. Let me tell ya, what a "ladies" belt it's going to be! Pink & Blue jeweled buckles and conchos not to mention the turquoise leather dye :) But she does know what she likes!

Let me know what store hours / days are good to stop by and I would be thrilled to stop by the store!

Cool bagger, pard. Fine passenger, too. You're lucky your wife likes to ride with you. Lots of ladies don't like riding. Mine got tired of bonking my helmet with hers so we got a bike for her. Thanks for the pic.
