I moved your request to this forum, since you'll get maximum exposure, and hopefully maximum response.

'The Old-Fashioned Way' deals more with how things were made, than it does with history and personalities.

That said - John Wesley Hardin was one of the West's most notorious figures, and there are reams of information on him on-line and on bookshelves.

A simple turn to your search engine will bring up more than you can use at first, and using www.bibliofind.com or www.bookfinder.com will give you numerous titles that can be borrowed through your Public Library, and www.genforum.com can assist with the Family Tree.

This available information's fairly old, as are the photos - after this time, the liklihood of new photos and information being unearthed is somewhat slim, but both may be new to you, and that'll be a help.

While you're waiting - try:

'The Life of John Wesley Hardin (As Written by Himself) - Hardin

'Gunfighters of the Old West' - Southworth

Good Luck!

Story

There was a reenactment of his last shootout in El Paso on 19 Aug 08.
You might want to pick up a copy  of Metz's THE SHOOTERS

I dont have any info that cant be found with a simple search and im not trying to hijack the thread but I am curious if there are any movies out there about Hardin. I have always been keen of his story and have one of the older original copies of his book and also a new one that I read. Seems there are lots about Billy the Kid and Jesse James and stuff but I have never seen a movie on Hardin.

'The Life of John Wesley Hardin (As Written by Himself) - Hardin

You can order this book direct from University of Oklahoma press. That is where I bought my copy and it is a most interesting read coming from the man himself.

Daniel Nighteyes

I don't know how accurate it is, but John Wesley Hardin (played by Randy Quaid) figured prominently in the made-for-TV movie Streets of Laredo, which is part of the Lonesome Dove series.

Texas Lawdog

Mr. Hardin had numerous run ins with Texas Rangers during his life. He was even confronted by Bill Hickok on a couple of occasions.   Hardin was eventually arrested in Pensacola Florida by the Rangers. He was brought back to Texas and was tried and convicted. He spent 18 years in prison in Texas.  He had studied law and when he got out of prison he traveled to El Paso to practice law. He was killed by a constable in El Paso a few years later.

Hardin was a psychopathic killer. Period. The Metz book pretty much sums this up. However, he was NOT the most feared gunman in the Old West. That title probably goes to Jim Currie, the only man Hickock said he feared.  ;)

I have one of the early copies I bought from an antique book dealer. I also have a newer paperback version that I read. Good good.

I see, you can tell he was a psychopath, because you knew him... Right?

No person alive, today, ever saw John Wesley Hardin.

No practicing mental heal professional ever interviewed Hardin...

Leon claire Metz is a writer, not a practicing mental health professional.

Therefore, no one knows whether Hardin had specific mental health issues or not...

I didn't know Charles Manson nor Jeffrey Dahmer either, but I'm pretty sure they were nuts.  ::)

I'm not a kid, I may be older than your father.

I have read of the shooting/snoreing incident. If it really happened why didn't they try to apprehend Hardin for it? Why isn't it clearly documented with the decedents name and coronors report. Where are the eye witness statements and newspaper accounts?

We are living in an age where many people believe everything they read, and hear. It's amazing to me that people, even believe, what they see on the movie screen.

Dee Brown wrote a book called "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee." This book was a gross plagurization of Robert I. Wellmans book, "Indian Wars of the West". The book, "Indians Wars of the West," Was the compilation of his two early works, "Death on Horse back," and "Death on the Prairie."

Dee Brown wrote that the soldiers started firing at the Indians first. That is not true. The soldiers were confiscating firearms, when a minor subchief named Yellow Bird, started firing at the soldiers.

Does that prove you can trust everything written in a book?

Before something is to be believed, it needs to have hard historical evidence, to back it up. Historians all put their bias into their work. Dee Brown in particular.

How many inacurate stories have you read about Wyatt Earp? One story will have him as a knight in shining armor, and the next story will him him as the head pimp in a brothel. Don't put much credence in what Stuart Lake wrote about Wyatt Earp. He would never have been allowed to publish his book, by Josie Earp, if he didn't write what she wanted to see in his book. Stuart Lake should have waited until after she died (in 1944) and then write a good, truthful book.

One or two sources can't be relied on.

I have a library of over 500 history books on the Old West. I have these books, and I try to acquire more good books, because I found out at a very early age, that most writers facts coud not be depended upon.

Having said the above, there are two historians that I find pretty straight forward in their writings. One, Robert M. Utley, is a history professor at the University of New Mexico. The other is Leon Clair Metz. Both are clear thinking, straight forward writers.

I was refering to FCK.  ::)

Also it seems you believe what you read also, my referance was tongue in cheek, but one would think he had that type of reputation or folks wouldn't have wrote that and it sure wouldn't still pop up. ;)
