Howdy Pards,

There's no shoes fer this one yet but I wanted to put'er here and ask yall's advice about it.  I finished this one up last night and I'm havin a bit of trouble tryin to decide what type of sheath to make fer her.  Figured who better to ask than the good folks right here in The Leather Shop.  I was thinkin about tryin out the mexican loop style but just not sure if thats gonna be the right fit.  If yall wanna read a bit more about this knife you can check out this thread

I sure do appreciate yall's help in figurin out the best way to go with this sheath

Thanks alot Pards,   Josh  ;D

S'cool looking knife.  Again, the workmanship is right on the money.

This knife is Awesome, it has the look of old yet perfectly kept, I like the style and your your choice of scales and pins really make this knife stand out, the blade looks like you could shave with it. I think your idea of a Mexican loop would look good, and like Marshal Wills suggested maybe some fringe on the seam line or even the mouth would look good, but what ever you choose will look good holding this neat looking knife. ::) :o 8)

Josh, definitely a South of the border style sheath would be great.
Nice knife

I know I should be able to figure this out myself, but what's to keep the twist in the loop?

Marshal Will Wingam

The leather is twisted when wet. When tied to the sheath, a little extra twist will hold the loop in it.

JD, here's what a twisted belt loop looks like. It looks like it wouldn't work too well, but it hangs straight. This is on a knife that was made for me by a knife maker in Finland. It was a gift, I had nothing to do with making it. It's a really fine knife. Here's also a picture of the whole thing.

Interesting effect Will, first time I've seen this as well, that's a good looking knife there, is that a wooden sheath wrapped in leather, nice looking and unusual look, almost Asian in design.

Marshal Thanks for pict. Never seen that befor. Knife and sheath are nice but different. Takes some to get used to it. KT

Marshal Will Wingam

That knife is a traditional Finnish knife. The lower part of the sheath is wood and the upper is leather. The leather holds the knife in without binding. The handle bottoms against the wooden part of the sheath. It's a part of the Finnish traditional outfit, much like our western holsters and knives are.

Will, I sure like that knife and sheath and the wood is awsome too.

Got my new leather shop finished, just getting it arranged and stocked up then it's Project time. :)

Very nice Puuko (sp) Marshal Will! That loop is interesting. May have to try that one of these sheaths coming up!

Josh, your knife is georgeous, and I agree that a nice Chuck Burrows type sheath would look great on it!

I guess I was way off with this knife and sheaths origin, but your right, it does have that look to it .

Thanks for the heads up on this

MWW,

Thats a fine example of a Puukko.  I've never used one but those who have seem to fall in love with'em.

I got a variety of suggestions as to the style of sheath for this knife and I do know that many Pards just might prefer to make their own sheath fer it.  So I decided to go ahead and post'er in the classifieds an see how it goes over.

I'm not opposed to any particular style and would embrace the customers request as best of my ability.  I have been thinking that perhaps a rawhide covered sheath may be the way to go with this one but I do kinda dislike perhaps alienating a potential customer with the design of the sheath. These are just my thoughts out loud and there is the chance I'm totally off base with this line of thought.

I'm figurin perhaps a poll may be the order of the day to assist in figurin things out here.

Lets assume your in the market fer a fine handmade knife.  Would you rather... ?
1. Have some input on the design or opt to bend yer own sheath.

2. See the complete package ready to go out of the box as I designed it too my own liking.

The only problem I fersee with including customer input in the design of the sheath is the thinking "What if say I'll take it and request a sheath of XYZ type and I'm not happy with the sheath once it's completed."

This would be a valid concern but from my point of view I'll still be offering a guarentee and also if the sheath looked like the south bound side of a north bound mule I'd understand and have no ill reguards toward a decision not to take it at that point.

I feel perty confident that any sheath I might make would more than meet the expectations of said customer though.

Pards, Yalls help, thoughts, an opinions are doin me a great service in assisting me in findin my place in the custom knife arena and I thank ya fer lendin a hand
