That is nice work TyG. Very impressive, and a cool set up with your knife making friend. He does good work as well. Thanks for the pictures, JD

That's what i want to do on my first try.Can i use a sheath i already have that is blank?I have no problem with unstiching it and tooling then stiching back.Would have to bleach it(?) to get what little shine there is on it off.

If i go from scratch i have no idea of what thickness of leather to use.Is yours lined or just from one piece of leather.

Nice job on that :)

You could use the sheath you have but depending on the finish it has, you need to get water into it to tool it. I would use the sheath as a pattern for your new one, when you open it you will see the thickness of leather needed and also the method of construction for the new sheath.

Yes the sheath I built was lined, pigskin is good or any light split leather

Here is another Wall Plaque I just finished. This Holster was made out of a piece of scrap 5-6 oz. leather and dyed with Coffee dye. The holster was immersed in the Coffee dye for sixty hours. After drying, It received two coats of Neet's Foot Oil and two coats of Skidmore's. I still need to learn how to vary the overall appearance with the oil applications. I really like working with both the Coffee Dye and the Walnut dye. The dyeing process takes longer but I think one gets a more uniform appearance. It's also not as messy and it is more economical.

I'm going to put this Wall Plaque up for sale in my neighbor's Antique shop. We are both curious if there is any market out there for this sort of thing.

Again, special thanks go to Ten Wolves for his help, guidance and inspiration in using home brewed dyes.

You make me proud Pard, you did a dandy job on this, and your hand made wooden gun looks real as all get out, I'm sure some one is going to grab this one up, it has a lot going for it. WELL DONE  ::) :o 8) :D ;D And as far as the dye, I was glad to help, they have become my first choice for a dye also, the colors are limitless. ::) ;D

That came out great.
I think there should be a market for them. They sell the shadow box sets with a gun and badge and picture, etc.

Nice rig pard. Anyone would be right proud to hang that in their home.

FEATHERS

G'Day Johnny,Real, real nice.Hey Ten Wolves your homemade dyes remind me of a pair of moccasins I made for my daughter way back when she was 5 or 6.I showed her all the hide that I had & asked what color? She said PINK,I said no pink, just brown, dark brown or tan.She said PINK,so I had a look & found some chrome tanned made her moccasins then soaked them in Beetroot juice over nite. She loved her PINK moccs.Feathers

Johnny, the whole thing looks great. Hand made wooden guns, wow! How long does it take you to carve one of those? JD

Johnny McCrae

Many thanks for the kind words Pards.

JD,
I'm guessing I have less than an hour's time in the wood pistol. The wood pistol is in the holster permanently so I only need to concentrate on the part of the pistol that shows. I saw the outline of the pistol and grip with a band saw. I then shape everything with my oscillating sander. After that I do the final finishing with sand paper and steel wool. What makes the pistol look decent is the genuine walnut grip. I've been learning how to carve grips and use my practice grips for the plaques.

I get rusty when I don't have any leather working projects going on. These Wall Plaques give me something to make. They also use up scrap leather and my practice grips.

That looks great Johnny, and if the granddaughter likes it, thats' a bonus! Kids her age are notoriously hard to please. Fashion is such a big part of their lives at younger and younger ages these days. Very nice work. JD

Howdy Johnny,  :)
Man O Man, that purse looks like one of those HIGH DOLLAR ONES that my wife is allways wanting to buy >:(
I guess I am going to have to start going shopping with her and take my camera, then when she is not looking, I will take a pic of it and the label, have you make them, and pay you for making them and we will both be smiling ;D
I have never figured out, why wowen have to have so many shoes and purses ??? ??? If I had as many guns as my wife does shoes, I wouldn't get anything done but wiping them down!
Great Job My Friend!!
