did Pietta ever or do they still make a 1848 colt Dragoon copy?
Or are the only ones made by uberti?
I am partial to pietta for some reason.
And also are there comversions available fort he dragoon?
I heard them once called the colt canon and As duvall said in open range, "I fancy a gun with some heft to it"

could have swore that they did and I'm certain cabela's carried it but I just checked the web site and ...... it ain't there ....... they got the walker if that is at least close

I can't speak for Pietta back past 20 years or so, but no; only Uberti has made Dragoons, (and Walkers) as far as I have found.

I think cylinders for Dragoons are recently available, but I'm not sure whether Kirst or R&D - or BOTH - make them.  It took a while for them to make them for the open-top Colt design - as opposed to the closed-frame Remington (stronger) style.

Pettifogger

I don't ever recall seeing a Pietta marked Dragoon.  ASM made some and made Walkers as well.  I bought a Cabellas Walker last year and it was a Uberti.

Pietta made Dragoon ...no

But they made Pattersons as well as the 60 Army , 51 & 61 Navy  ( Starr , Le Mat, Remy's & Spiller & Burr)

Both Uberti (now) & ASM  did make the Dragoon & Walker

The Walker Cabela's sells is a Uberti

and R&D does offer a Drop in for both the Dragoon & Walker ... However be sure which Dragoon you getting the Conversion

1st.models have oval Walker style bolt stops and 2nd & 3rd Models have Rectangles

EDIT
Uh Oh... Pettifogger you responded while I typed   :)

The only Dragoon Cabelas ever offered was the Colt Signature Series , 3rd model Dragoon , and this is it and is where I bought it too for that matter. Which is of UBERTI Parts , finished here in the USA by Colt Black Powder Company . Now defunked and thank God , they sucked as a company and there service was terrible too . Nice guns though !!!! Cabelas also offered Accessories packages for these Colts, flask, nipple wrench , original type blued Colt cap tin , bullet mold , etc , all engraved with Samuals name as was the gun . Nice stuff . I bought both , and an 51 Navy too back in the way back machine days . And no those are not Colt grips or Uberti , those are mine , Canary wood . Pietta never made these guns , wish they would now though , although Ubertis version is very nice, I have one of those too . Third pic .

Uberti is the second third and forth gun in this arsenal

Hey BowView, are you going to Flatwater this weekend in Grand Island? I am thinking I will shoot cap and ball, and if you want can take my Walker along for you to play with.

Wow ,
I go and try to work for a few hours and all my questions are answered.

If I were to get a BIG revolver I think I wold prefer the dragoon over the Walker due to the improvments such as the loading lever latch.  (I've seen guys get hung up whenthe lever drops in the middle of a firing string.)

Or I might think about an 1860 as it wold probably be closer in size to my remington new army.

Just never had anything of the colt open top design and thought it might be ok to try.
I could either shot it with a conversiion along with my pietta 73SAA or go old school and put the CB cylinder back in the Reimington.  Just i the dreaming and If I win the lottery stages right now.  Thaks again for the great info.

DM
I might be at flat ater on Sunday but iI'll probably shoot modern with the .38's.
I might have some leather work to send with you though.

OK. If you go, send me a note, and I will pack some of each. You can try them out and see what you like. I got a bunch of them,  but no Dragoon.

FYI Bow View Haymaker ,

Just for your info , and when you hit the Lotto ( remember your freinds , me !  ;D ) , but Dixie Gun Works currently has Uberti 1st Model Dragoon for $299 on Sale , a good bargain and a good example of what the Dragoon revolvers were becomming in there run of the four different models , The Whitneyville , 1st , 2nd , and finally 3rd Model , with round trigger guard .
I definately highly recommend any of the Uberti Dragoons being produced recently , they are "TOP of The Line" revolvers and smooth as silk in finish and function . The Two Walkers and Dragoon I bought all have fabulous triggers right out of the box and not a real flaw on any of them , they are absolutely fine guns  ;D And the best part , they are WARTHOG in the extreme !
I really think you " NEED " one , so tell the wife I told you it would be ok , alright  ;D If she actually buys that dribble , send me one too for enabling your addiction to continue today , okeedokkeeee  :o But seriously, you won't regret owning one or two or three of them , or the Walker , they are very cool too .   ;) The 1860 your thinking about as a choice is no comparison in FUN FACTOR with the big Horse Pistols . The 1860 (?) Not even close . You''ll understand that when you have two in your hands going off simultaniously with 50 or 60 grains of 2ff chambered up in them . You want to talk ROLLING THUNDER !!!!!!
Enjoy .... 8)

Howdy!

IF you get a Dragoon (1st or 2nd [I think] Model) that has the original latch design, you can STILL blow the loading lever down with a hefty charge.  That's why Colt went to the style that is on their 1851s, 1860/61s/62s, etc. that we see most commonly.  I shoot my Dragoon with (mostly) a 42 gr. or so charge of 3f.  At 45 grs. or higher, (which is still within the design limits - 50 grs. - of a Dragoon) it will still produce enough recoil to "overcome" the stock latch spring!  (Yes - for all you who say "Bailey - you don't NEED a 42 gr. charge; it's wasteful for CAS shooting."  I KNOW!  But #1 - I like it, and #2 - more importantly, mine has to have a MINIMUM of 35 grs. of powder to keep from having an airspace under the ball.  I'd have to add some material (JB Weld, welded, etc.) to the ball rammer to push the ball further down onto the powder.  My Dragoon is a 2nd Gen. Colt 1st Model, so I can't say what one marked "Uberti" would do.  (Since Uberti had a hand in the Colt guns, I'll bet it's pretty much the same.)

I unnerstand whut Al-A-Bammie is sayin' here, but I sure have as much fun shootin' MY 1860 as I do my Dragoon!  But that's me!  And I get a MINIMUM of 35 grs. of 3f in my 1860.  (Uberti made; marked "Iver Johnson"   Not many of 'em around.)

By the way, Like Alabama said, the Dixie price of $299 is a great price.  I bet you'll never be disappointed if ya get one!
