Thats right pards!  The revolver Duke used in his first starring roll was an nickle plated Remington 1858.  In The Big Trail, Duke was given his first starring role by Rouel Walsh in 1929.  The history of the move is avalabile on the new DVD, and as I was enjoying the film in 70mm format, I noticed Duke was using a Remington during the buffalo hunt sequence.   :o
In his subsaquent western rolls at Mascot, LoneStar and Republic, he used a .45 colt on a smaller 38./357. frame.  He had huge hands, but he said the smaller frame felt better.
Check it out if you have the film, if not its a good reason to get the new DVD. ;D
