Any chance some of you guys can post pics of your clothing outfits, name each item and where ya got'em? You can PM me if ya want. I have been looking at clothes now for over a year and can not for the life of me figure out what's what.

I'd like a good ole cattle drivers outfit between 1865 and 1873

Look at I SEE BY YOUR OUTFIT.  It is perhaps a bit later, but is a good collection from the Northern Plains.

It is a good place to start.

California pants, as known in those days were different.  There are some references, but I can't put a finger on them now.

My recollection is that they were wool. straight legged, high pockets in front and a single rear pocket, if any.  Leather "foxing" seems to have been optional.

You should try this request on the history board.

Howdy,

Wahmaker does a fair job and their cloths are made in the US. Try Walton & Taylor Merchantile online.  They have good period correct clothing.  Also, some of the Civil War Sutlers have civilian clothing that fits into your time period.  Have you considered making your own??!!  My wife and I sew and it is cool to have an outfit no one else has.

Happy Trails,

Have a look :  http://www.drburkholter.com/cf20.html.  Everything ( I do mean EVERYTHING ) was "on the cheap" . . . leather coat with the sheepskin lining, collar, and cuffs I got here in Stockton in a thrift for $ 16 a year ago.  Leather vest was $6, . . hats were  $2 and $4 each, . .  etc. . . .  :)

Getting this sort of stuff  "on the cheap" . . . . leaves money available for Original Winchester '73s when someone post one for sale on the SASS wire  ;D.  It is GREAT ! . . . . am now checking on getting it fitted with an octegon 30in. barrel.

The beard in those pictures just a little "out of date" it is now enormous with mustaches reaching over half way to my ears.  I'll get some pictures again soon and post on the wire.

Good shootin', . . . & clothing shoppin' . . . . .  :)

Take a look through the 'back pages' of both the 'Historical Society Forum' and the 'NCOWS Forum' and look for articles about building your Impression.

You'll find links to a number of vendors and ideas on how to create your own outfit in a far less expensive manner than by just buying outright.

The Thrift Store is your friend - as is the Public Library - and armed with the knowledge of what was worn (natural fabrics), you can find some surprising things that you can modify to fit the era.

Even a modern cowboy hat of good quality can be re-shaped fairly easily, as well.

Good Luck!

I can attest to that.  I needed something for my first shoot, no time or money to order what I really  wanted.  I went to the Clippity Clop Shop (where all us Cleveland cowboys shop) and bought the cheapest hat they had big enough.  Old hat maker turns on the steamer, pulls out some old forming blocks older than both of us, removes the crimp in the crown, rounds off the top, reshapes the brim and and voila, decent hat.  No extra charge.

And the sound of new creaky leather!  Buying new duds was the aspiration of many, just like today.  They weren't afraid of color and mixing patterns either.  They wuz signifyin'.   8)

That looks a great value offered by Hamilton.

Savvy Jack: You reference the years 1865 - 1873. Clothing from that era was pretty similar to that seen in the CW. Still fairly baggy. tapered clothing did not start to appear until later in the 1870's in my opinion. Consider images from the period you want to portray. California pants for Texas cowboys were not there yet in your years. High heeled riding boots were starting to be in vogue by the end or your period, but I would think there were far more flat heeled stove pipes and brogans went up the trail during those years. Get a pair of wool pants from a CW sutler, and a work shirt from the period (that bicycle shirt you are wearing did not appear until much later in the century) put an old leather belt with roller buckle around your waist to hold your pants up (even though they had no belt loops they did that) or a pair of correct braces and then get a hat. A low crown hat of 4 -5 inches with a 3 1/2 to 4 inch brim that is either uncreased or creased by happenstance. Civil war sutlers are good for these years, Blockade Runner has a pair of wool pants and vest with hand sewn button holes for a very reasonable price.

Now you only need an old hope saddle, an underfed horse of about 14 hands and a grass rope, you are now ready to cowboy.

Jack, I don't remember the names of them.  The pants are light blue and the only ones they had.  The shirt is just a pullover with the buttons about half way down.
I just got some new Henleys on sale at Cabela's.  I think I am gonna start wearing them more.  I really like them and I think they are authintic.

O.K.  Here's one maybe I can get some help on.  Looking for an outfit that an ex-calvary soldier might wear.
Kind of like a cowboy version of Han Solo from Star Wars.
Blue pants with possibly a yellow stripe on the outer leg seams...high black boots...probably a vest, dark leather prefered...probably whit period shirt, or calvary-type shirt.

I have not had very good luck trying to find calvalry-type clothing. :P

Been working on my hat. This was my grandfather's Resistal hat from Fredlin's Hitchin Post in Montana from about 1970. I have the crown smoothed out and will start on the dents later. Also will work on the brim "rainbow"?
