I have one of the three first NWMP carbines brought in to Canada, with the serial numbers in the range of the originals.  Only a few shots so far, but every thing seems to work right and tolerances seem to be reasonable.

Rounds loaded in .348 cases converted by myself, with GOEX FFF over the Gould HP bullet are showing pretty good grouping.  I am going to fit an original Lyman tang sight before my next range session.

Don't have one of their 76s, but my Chaparral 1873 is a very nice rifle -- and every bit as good as any Uberti I have.

Thinks for the replys. only time will tell but you guys give me hope :)

Sir Charles you are using FFF. and not FF

Thanks
Neil

Yes, I am using 3F Goex.  Measure set at 65.  .060 beer mat card.  Oal2.3" No chrono data yet, but 2F, or Cartridge,  would give you a milder load.

I have an old Lyman tang sight mounted, but it obviously needs some windage.  I could shim the base to tip the sight, or wait to see if I can get a Marbles tang sight with windage in the base

Cross-stixs:  Mine was a total nightmare in the begining but that's when Italy had terrible QC.  Understand that has improve substantially now.  I worked the 'kink's out and it is a good rifle now.  One part of the rifle that was great from day one was the barrel ...

I sure can relate to John Boy!   :o

My Chaparral 45-75 Short Rifle, was a lesson in pain and frustration, understanding and patience and the age old " try, try, try and then try again!"

And now, I think I have finally gotten her to the point where if I do my part right, she does her part right!  ;)

Great luck on your journey, be long ( like mine) or be it short.

Chaparral ??? I have a 45-60 with a 28 in barrel . And yes I have had my share of TROUBLE and last friday it broke again . This is the rifle I was planning to hunt with . I wish USFA made them but I would have to sell a kidney to pay for it .

Cross-stixs

Hi  Rowdy

I feel your pain i was hoping to go hunting with the 76 this year to. but it has been a long road to get one.
So good or bad this will be the one i have to work with ( hoping good ) if you don't mined me asking what broke.

Okdee  thanks  it will be here Oct. 15-16  and i will report back when it arrives

Okee
Last Friday I was out shooting  . I noticed that when you levered the rifle the hammer wouldn't stay cocked
but if the barrel was pointed up and you levered it,  it would stay cocked. or if you held tension on the trigger it worked so I knew it had to be the trigger spring . Today I got a call from the gunsmith and that was the problem . What happened was the spring was a touch short and the screw hole was large  and the screw was lose which caused  it to get out of the trigger notch . I had him replace the spring and hand fit the next spring , which will be a better grade of metal .

OKDEE

Interesting!  I am trying to picture in my mind what happened!  Dad Gum coffee is not working!   ???

I need to get a schematic of the 1876 breakdown and relook at the parts in the area of the hammer and trigger.

I am aware of the hammer main spring and how the hammer notchs in a couple of places on the trigger.

I am not so sure about the trigger spring.

I will check it tonite at home.  I should be reloading 45-75's tonite too !!!   ;D

Well got out to shoot on the weekend and everything worked great.

I was even able to keep a group.  didn't think i would because i was using 45. mines for fire forming.

Now to try the 325 RCBS & LEE 340 gr. to find a good deer load.

Thanks again to all for the great info. you sure made it easy to get started :)
