Well Deer season is just around the corner .   I was wondering if anyone  is planning on using there 76 for Deer hunting .
Do you plan on using black or smokeless ??? Do you dress in 1880 clothing + the blaze orange that is mandatory . I have been doing the Vintage Hunting for a couple years and love it . We need pictures of you and your Trophy . Good luck and Happy Hunting .

Black River Johnny

Yes, I plan on using mine and using black powder, I have a 45-75 cimarron. I am going to shoot it for the first time Sunday and fire form some 348 brass. I did some work to it and you can work the action with one finger and I really like it. I need to post some pics and get registered as a 76 owner. We are going to have a doe only season here in Wisconsin the first part of October and I plan on shooting one, can't wait. Good luck to you and anybody else that is going to use one.

Good Luck on your up coming hunt . Don't forget to take a picture . They say it's worth a thousand words .

Dirty Brass

I hunt here in Wisconsin too, and plan on using my 76' in 45/60 caliber during the doe only 4 day hunt, as it has a shorter barrel than my 45/75. Saving my 66' in 44/40 for mid-week in November! I'll post results if there are any - keep your fingers crossed, and good luck with the 45/75! Knock one down!  ;)

Good luck on your upcoming Deer hunts . Either weapon is a good choice in my book . I love the old guns 76 or 73 or 66 even a Henry will do . Hunting is the last way we can relive a small part of the wild west . But don't forget about the game warden and the Laws . We ran a Deer camp a couple years ago and had a great time . Siting around the campfire at night enjoying the outdoors  this is the part of life that is special for the working man .

Hobie

I need to get out with mine and practice so that I can use it.  I've got a .45-75 Chaparral  SRC
Sincerely,

Hobie

Thanks, and I couldn't agree with you more. I've raised both my sons to appreciate and respect mother nature and the hunting traditions here in Wisconsin. We've been sitting around campfires, talking of the hunts and days experiences for nearly 20 years together (even longer for this ol' goat!) I'm very proud of how they have come to love the old ways of the west and respect and love for all types of firearms.

Hobie - good luck to you if you get that SRC out for a hunt!

We are lucky people we know about the Hunt .We know about sitting for hours watching the Woods and loving every minute of it . And at the end of the day you go back to camp rustle up some grub and the stories begin . There is something about sitting around a cracklin camp fire with a cup of hot coffee and friends . Good luck and Happy Hunting .

This is my current plan for this years hunts

Got a bear tag so I figure ta carry this one to start cause it'll do for either bear or deer (concurrent seasons):

If I get a bear first I'll switch to this one, it's lighter:

http://www.msnusers.com/GOFWGPinMakin/rifles.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=113

It started life as my coast range deer rifle, but when I started SASS I replaced the receiver sight with a buckhorn and it became my main match rifle.  After a year or so I got a 73 in 357 and it went back to being a deer gun.  But then I switch to B western and it came out of the safe and was replaced by the 73.

Been looking for two years for a .357 replacement and finally found this:

http://www.msnusers.com/GOFWGPinMakin/rifles.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=114

Put in a spring kit in it, did some polishing and shimmed the right shell guide.  Now, with .357 length rounds it runs like a champ no matter how fast you run it.  So I put the receiver sight back on the .44 and it's back where it belongs.

We also have Elk out here, not them puny Rocky Mountain ones mind ya, we's got the big'uns,   the Roosevelt.  So I had ta do some reloading for this too:  (will also use the 76 with 350 grain lyman @ 1450fps)

After Deer, Bear and Elk seasons are over we call coyotes and cats.  The bottom two in .357mag are perfect for that:

And just in case the Third Mongolian Hoard comes storming over the hill I have to keep these cleaned and oiled ta boot (Carlos your gonna love this one)

Fine looking rifles , Good luck with the Bear Hunt. Hope you get it with your 76 . The NWMP Carbine has to be a little Hunter friendly than my 28 inch rifle . Hope you have a safe and successful hunting season .

Black River Johnny

Well, our Doe only season starts here in Wisconsin tomorrow. I will be able to get out but only tomorrow, I forgot that I was going out of town for the Weekend :-\ I've got the 45-75 ready to go. I am really not a still hunter, but I plan on just walking around and enjoying the day ;D hopefully I will get some action and see how the big boy works.

Grizzly Adams

It don't get any better than a day of hunting. ;D  Enjoy! :)

I spent last weekend in a blind with my favorite muzzle loader and watching lots of does and no Buck ??? I figure he would rather be taken with a 76 . While I was setting there waiting I had a group of Turkeys walk by at hand shaken distance , that pop up blind works like a charm .  Good luck and safe Hunting .

Dirty Brass

Well, as luck would have it I never had a chance to use the 45/60 on a doe. Never even saw anything during daylight hours, but plenty of pics on the cameras after hours. Guess I'll have to wait for the regular season :) Hope others had better luck!

Black River Johnny

Just got back from pheasant hunting, before I left I got one day of hunting in our doe only season, no luck. I walked around and I am not that good at that type of hunting. I did see a deer but only the rear half and could not shoot. now I will have to wait until our regular season later November.  :)

Just registered with you all so I can reply. Been reading your forum for awhile. I have a '76 chaparral, 45-75 that I bought last Dec.  that I also plan on using for deer hunting also in WISCONSIN! My wife and I are hunting up near Merrill, we live near Madison.Been using black powder guns for 25 years now, muzzleloaders, then a .50 cal. sharps paper cart. for civil war re-enacting and deer hunting. Bought a '73 .45 LC first, then traded that in for my '76 .45-75 along with reloading dies. Couple of dozen rounds and lots of lessons learned, I'm hooked on black powder cart. shooting. I'm just glad to have some people to talk to about it!
