I got me one of these for long range work while on the ranch. I was wondering if anyone used them in CAS?

Just got a USFA 10" Buntline special via Turnbull restorations.  Really beautiful metal work (case colors, blueing).  I've used it in one match and miss as much with it as any other 6-gun I own...

The picture is of my SBH with a 10-1/2" barrel in .44magnum. I can "Ring the gong" at 100 yards with it off of a rest. I also have the 9-1/2" version in .22/.22magnum, which is also lot of fun to shoot! The long barrels are great for these old eyes!!!!!

What kind holster will you use to carry that thing?   Also, you think about some type of flash suppressor.  Officer safety, you know..   A pair of training wheels might be good also.

TL,

I actually got three holsters for this beast. The first is the basic, garden variety Hunter model 1100 that hangs down to my knees. The second is a modern DeSantis crossdraw rig (good for when I am riding the ATV's) and the last is a DeSantis shoulder holster that swivels down when you draw the monster (this takes some practice and real long arms!). I haven't found a western style holster for it as yet. A muzzle brake is a good idea, although with the weight of this bruiser, recoil is not a problem. I have thought of mounting it on a carriage and making it a "Crew served weapon" though!

With one of them long barrel shooting revolvers I would need training wheels just to hold it up so I could shoot it. ;D

Yer right there Lawdawg....it is a might muzzle heavy for one handed (even two handed) shooting...... I find it shoots best over the saddle...........of my ATV!

I have a Uberti Buntline & Big Ed of San Pedro Saddlery built me a beautiful custom Buscadero rig for it. Haven't shot it in a match yet. But I will. :D  Here's a pic of the rig.

I got to say Col. that is a definately a "Big iron" and you sure have right fine belt rig for it. Must have taken a cow or two for all the leather in that rig!!!! Do you have to have someone standing on a chair to draw that for ya?!

When I was on Patrol years ago,  I carried a Nickel plated 6.5  Smith 41 Mag.  Night fire qualification looked like a 106 mm recoiless rifle. I carried it in a high rise Safariland duty holster.  It was really comfortable in the car.  My other big iron is a 7.5 Ruger Blackhawk that I shoot wild pigs with.

Whew doggie, that Smith sounds like a "Rhino roller" fer sure. Must have been perfect for stopping renegade transit buses!!!!
My main hunting irons are either a 5-1/2" Stainless RBH or a 7-1/2" RBH Bisley. The monster at the top of the post is my "Ridge gun" that I use when I am on the ranch "checking fences" while riding my ATV. Definately not the gun I want when I am hiking the hills.... better on something with wheels!!!!

Arabela Kid,   You mentioned the Lincoln Co. area of NM.  My grandfather had a ranch near Santa Rosa during the early 1900's.  He died in 1920 in the Texas Panhandle.  He was a ranch cowboy for many years.  The part of Texas that I am from is only a couple of hours drive from Ft.Sumner.  I have a BS in History, so I am very familar with that area and the Lincoln Co. Wars.   I don't get to visit that part of the country very much anymore.  My parents had a fishing cabin at Lake Conchas when I was a little kid. I married a big city girl who doesn't care for ranch country.   Maybe when I finally retire, I can buy that Mini Winnie and go back up there for a good, long trip.

Go to

click on the photo to enlarge, and click the small icon in lower right corner to enlarge again, and check out Sundown Jones (cowboy on the right).  He actually shoots some stages (and shoots them well) with those "long toms".

Big Hext Finnigan

Sundown is a hoot.
He's a great example of the Cowboy way..

Adios,

Sidekick

I shoot with a guy who shoots two 10 1/2 inch SBH if that isn't enough he has shot gunfighter with them.
