Seems like I remember my Dad tellin' that his Dad had one of those Chrysler Airflows.  I also remember Grand dad havin' big Studebaker sedan back then.

Apparently the problem with the Chrysler Airflow was that although it was popular with the kids back then it was the daddys that were buying the cars.

The Studebaker model that he had was called Dictator.  I've got a picture of my Grandparents and my Dad in that thing taken in about 1930. My Dad would have been about 12 or so.

As a kid loved the look of the Studebaker Avanti.  There were two that lived in Racine, WI.  Both were gold, so I started looking at the plates to tell them apart!

With the Avanti there was no question, especailly the supercharged R3:  It was GOING capping out at about 150mph, if I recall.

About five years ago there was a Studebaker Avanti still being driven in Victorville and a year ago I saw one of the Canadian Avantis at a GLB lunch in Ontario.

Back when I went to trade school in 75-76 about 25 miles west of Lincoln we car pooled and drove out every day.  Was rollin' down I-80 on mornin' about 80 in one a them Type 3 VW Squarebacks the folks owned.  Somethin' red came up in the rearview and blew right by us like we were standin' still.  Got a good look at it as it flew by.  guy with me, thought he was a geearhead (yah right, won a 12 pack off him one time, he could not find the carb on the VW. ;D) wondered what the heck that was, tolt him a 63 Studdie.  At school he told everyone I tried to tell him we got passed by a Studdie flyin' low.  Teacher looked at me and I just said Avanti, he laughed and said it was a good thing we didn't get in it's way. :o

I like the 52-54 Starliner better, same basic body, no fins and it does not have the big chrome grill.

The Silver Hawk, The Golden Hawk, and the Avanti, they were all runners. We had an older guy, probably about my dad's age that had a 55 or 56 Studebaker Champion coupe. He put a 283 chevy motor in it. It was a real sleeper.
