I got the approx 900 sq feet of landscaping fabric and all the associated weeds pulled out of the garden and dumped at the dump.

Just finished the first pass with the tiller in the garden. It went so smoothly I don't think I need to take a second pass, just need to rake it out, build my rows and plant it.

One of these days I'll learn how to make rows with the tiller....

It's still Germany... just going under an assumed name,  that's all.  Remember?  Hitler was trying to re-join all parts of "Greater-Germania".

What is "landscaping fabric"?

Landscaping fabric is black plastic with tiny holes in it. You put it down (supposedly) to keep weeds out of a garden. The holes allow water to get to the plants you want. So, you roll it out, then cover it up and voila! a weed free garden.


But not really. The weeds will happily grow on top of the mulch and through the fabric. Grass grows exceptionally well on top of landscaping fabric. Which is fine if you want to grow grass and not a vegetable garden.

Sadly, my desire was to grow veggies last year. Instead, I had a lawn even you would envy, Forty Fonzai. The grass took over everything.

So, there I was this morning, stilll with my desire for a veggie garden, but with grass on top of mulch on top of landscaping fabric. All of it had to be ripped out before I could get to the dirt to till it.

It's all gone. The ground has been tilled and raked smooth so it's ready to be hoed and planted.

One small glitch... it's raining.

It's covered in chapter 12 of "Gardenin' Fer Yuppies."  Best thing fer weeds and grass is a grubbin' hoe.  Back when I was younger I tilled and planted a whole garden about 50'X50' with one.

All righty, Del, tell you what...

You drive three or more hours a day, put in 8.5 hours a day at work, do the laundry, clean house, cook once in a while, maybe eat, and still be able to keep my 30 x30 garden weed free with a hoe, and I'll hire you.

Four years ago, the ground of my now garden was a part of the woods. It was cleared, but was still full of rocks and roots.

If not for the landscaping fabric, I could have tilled and planted it this year with a hoe. I finally have the dirt in the condition where I could do it.

I chose not to.
