 Hey Everybody,

I'm looking for a 2nd set of revolvers, and over the past few days, got a chance to look at quite a few, and hold 'em in my hand. The best, and most natural fit was the 1858 Conversions in .38spl from Uberti via Taylors. And I'm considering a pair of these.

Can anybody give me a hand with feedback regarding these?

Is Uberti the only maker?

Can they be easily slicked up for shooting? Or,

Is there a gunsmith who sells them tuned up?

Thanks.
God forgives, I don't........

Cemetary,

I've been stronly considering buying a pair also.  To the best of my knowledge Uberti is the only manufacturer and sells them through Taylor's and Cimarron.  There's an excellent gunsmith in our neck of the woods (south central Texas) who does all the action work for Cimarron on the Evil Roy series revolvers.  He also sells all Cimarron products, so you should be able to purchase them niclely slicked up directly from him.  His name is Lonnie Ammans (alias "Valdez") and you can reach him through the Brazos Valley Desperados website.  Phone number is (979 ) 279-5859 or (979)279-3400.

I have 3 of them 2 from Taylors and a cimmeron.  The cimmeron is much better than both the Taylors.  I realize all are made by Uberti but I had an issue with the one taylors cylinder jamming up.  They did not reply to any of my emails or phone calls so I bought one from cimmeron, good right out of the box.

As far as shooting you can adjust the mainspring tension, also compared to rugers you do not have to cock the hammer back as far.  i have the 7.5 inch barrels, they are very accurate.

I like shooting them because no one else does....And they go with my 66 as far as period i represent.

Regarding my funky Taylors, I stripped parts form my BP 58 and got it working, now I keep it as a backup.  Might sell it later.

One more thing to keep in mind, there is no gap between the cylinder and backplate, this means you can not tell if you are on an empty cylinder, you have to carefully peak up front to see the lead noses....

Overall cool factor is a 10, accuracy is a 10 speed is a 5, maint is a 10 (good), looks are a 10.

I've had a pair of the Taylor's for over a year. They were accurate right out of the box. Mine are the 7 3/8 and I use them as my main match pistols. I had a pair of holsters made for them by Liberty leather. I did lighten up the hammer a little but never took them to a gunsmith. I'd highly recommend them.

If the chambers are recessed for the cartridge heads as it sounds like, you could mill a slot the depth of each recess to the outside as a window to see the brass.    It is a safer check of loaded or empty than looking down the front of the cylinder.  See the notches in an R&D cylinder of current manufacture.
