plain old 16 or 16D

One thought, I've seen a lot of times where someone think they need a size larger than what they do, what has happened they need the next size smaller in a Wide/EE, I see this in about 25% of guys.  If that is the case I may be able to help, will send you a PM.

Howdy cetme, not sure if you're asking about boots or shoes.  Not everyone wore boots, there were bankers, lawyers, gamblers, store keepers, carpenters and everything in between. Most of us have a pair of leather shoes in our closet that will work just fine for SASS or even NCOWS. There were shoes with laces, buckles, slip on, and ankle high like hush puppys. There was also lace up work boots for loggers and many others. I dress as a townie with vest, pocket watch, sleve garters and shoes. SASS prohibits tennis shoes and combat boots with heavy lug soles. Don't spend a fortune on clothes trying to get everything you need to start. A pair of leather shoes, jeans and a denim work shirt will get you started. The main thing is to get out there and start shooting. Good Luck.

From SASS Shooters Handbook & ROI
OUTLAWED • All types of athletic shoes or combat boots no matter the material from which they are constructed.
                 • Tennis, running, jogging, aerobic or other modern athletic shoes, combat boots.

Lace up ropers from your local western store are fine.  I would take the little tab out and wear them plain.  OK in NCOWS and I would think that they would be great in SASS.
