Play with yer tools and stains and such? Here is a portion of a design I made up for my holsters. Played with the tools and gettin' figured out what I might want to do with them. Also...played with the stains and finishes for a little experimentation. I found it kind of interesting.

Carved with EZ Glow

Dyed over EZ Glow and HI-Liter over that.

:o :oAWESOME,AWESOME,AWESOME :) If only I will ever get 1/6th that good at carving I would be a happy camper!!! :)

H.P great job, love the way you did the coloring. I got my tracing paper yesterday and I am going to start late in the week, How many weeks have I said that!! My biggest down fall is  am afraid to fail ::) In all the things I can do, I just don't know if I can do this, and failure I don't take likely!! The guy down at the Tandy store in Tulsa invited me down for the free lesson, but i can't drive that far, and sit for 4 hours!1 I am lucky to set up for a hour!!

Once again that is great looking carving!

For the background color? It's a combination of all the above. I worked the EZ Glow into the carving first and then over dyed with a Med. Brown spirit stain like Fiebing's. The I used the Hi-Liter over that. The background just kept getting darker through the process without any attempt at doing so.

With this practice piece, I now know which tools I want to use and Don't want to use. Experimenting and willing to fail is a good thing. Scrap is good stuff to learn some lessons on. There really is no such thing as failure. It is a opportunity to find out what ya like and don't like as well as find out what works good together.

I found this process interesting but I won't use it on my holsters as I want them to match the cartridge belt that I just finished. I will reserve this process for a whole knew rig or use it on a pair of saddle bags. Anyway, it was fun playing around with this piece of leather this afternoon and thought maybe I would share the experience with you fine fellas.

Looks like this was a fun process, this is what I like doing too, it lets you get any and everything you have on your mine out on the leather, and lets you know, like you said, what tools and stamps you will use when you do it for real on what ever project you're planning to use it on, same thing goes for color and finish, I really like fooling around with dye's and stains, the possibilities are endless, there are so many colors, tones and shades you can come up with, and thats the fun part. Anyway HP you did a nice job on this test sample, any part of it would be beautiful on any piece of leather, thanks for letting us have a looky- loo .  ::) :o 8)

Nice work. I have not been successful at carving. So far I do stamping on my work. Here is an example

Horsepen, its funny you mention that. I started a carving project last week, and wasnt absolutely committed to wasting a whole 2 holsters worth of leather if it didnt work out. I carved out a whole pattern, stamped it, but then played with some new dyes I had. The stamping came out alright, as did the dye, but wasnt the color I wanted. I am glad I tried it out first.
I would post pics, but my wife has the camera in Wyoming until the middle of the week. DM

OH! You're talking about fooling around with leather. That's different. Yeah, I do it a lot. I seldom try anything new without fiddling with test pieces. Tooling patterns, designs and color variations. There are always a lot of scraps lying around so I use them for test pieces. The holster I recently hosed recently is getting used for lots of testing. I've tried a couple things that have been on my mind but I just haven't gotten around to trying. That project certainly isn't wasted leather. I could still assemble it and have a holster but I sure wouldn't want it out there with my mark on it. ::)
