Anyone know where I maight be able to get a set of patterns for a Drover saddle from the 1870s?
Looking to build one on a slick fork tree.
Thanks Much for any direction.

I don't know much about where to locate patterns. Perhaps Will Ghormley will be able to steer you in the right direction.

It could be that some of the other pards here could help, too, but I don't know which ones have patterns or sources for them. I'm sure they'll chime in if they do.

After you get it finished, however, we'd love to see a picture of it posted here. We're photo junkies when it comes to leather.

Thanks,

Thanks Marshal Wil,
I emailed him and asked for help. I have many of his pattern packs for saddle bags and holsters and the like. This will be my first time trying a saddle so I bet it will really look like an 1880s handmade job! ;D A working cowboy saddle with no fancy stuff and more mistakes than you can count.

Hans,

You might want to contact David Carrico who recently bought some saddle patterns from F. A. Meanea which was the successor to the Meanea that you see in Packing Iron.  Here is a link to the thread from here in the Leather Shop:

Good luck in finding a pattern that you like! ;D

Dr. Bob,
Thanks very much. That is a great lead and I have emailed him as well.
Got a reply from Wil and he has been working on a project, but it is taking awhile. He had nothing right now, but said he should within a year if things stay on track. Very pard type person.

There ya go, Hans. Hopefully you'll get to crank a saddle out soon. That's a fun project.

Looking forward to doing this one. It will be for my Mustang so I need and Arab tree or something similar. He has a lot of Spanish in him and has a short back and is narrow up front. A real nightmare to fit. But I love him anyways ;D

My Arab was the same way. Finally lucked into a nice fit for him after quite a bit of searching. I wish I could have made him a saddle instead.  :'(  DM (who is envious)

Arabs and Mustangs do share a few traits. They both only have 5 lumbar vertabrate, so they have shorter backs. An Arab tree will fit a lot of Mustangs. My Wife's Mustang is just 180 out from mine. Hers has real wide shoulders and is also hard to fit. Go figure, we have them on both ends of the scale and neiter can take an off the rack saddle! ;D
