Finaly got a 45-75 NWMP coming, or it will soon as I get the money and FFL sent that way.  I've got the Lee 3 die set for reloading, how many of you guys use a factory crimp?  I've always used the standard 3 die set on everything else, so I'm a little confused.  What's the differance, and if needed will it make that big a differance untill I can get one?  Where can I get one?

Thanks

I sent a fired, empty case to Lee for their factory crimping die.  Got it and it works.  No problems.  Would suggest, if you are interested, to go to their web site and inquire.  It seems that it cost me about 25 bucks and took about 3 weeks or so to get it.  I have one of these dies in 45-70, 45-90, 33 WCF, 40-82 and 375 H&H with no problems.  They keep the bullets where they belong. But it is up to you what you do.  It is rather redundant to use this die with BP loads but with smokeless it does help.

Thanks, I'll see how it shoots then maybe send off for one.  Does it realy improve accuracy?  What's the differance between factory and normal crimp dies?

thanks,

I have an FCD that 3 of us got at the same time.  I've yet to use it...  ::)

I have one of those 3 FCDs and it works very well indeed.  The same die works equally well with both the 45-75 and the 45-60. ;D

Hi guys!  I'm pretty new to reloading, but I have been successfully loading .348 Win conversions for my NWMP carbine. However, I wonder if this quote means that no crimp is needed with black powder loads?  Haven't had much luck with putting a crimp on with the 'regular' Lee 45-75 dies, and would order a factory crimp die but if it isn't absolutely necessary, I could use the $$$ elesewhere.  Thanks in advance for the input!  John

Hi,John.
When using BP, the strength of the crimp is not an issue due to the fact that the full case of BP does not allow the bullet to slip down into the case due to the effects of recoil.  When shooting smokeless, the bullet is solely dependent on the crimp to prevent bullet slip.  However, even with BP, some crimp is needed.

I use the FCD when loading smokeless in the 45-75.
