Howdy all,
New to the forum so sorry if this question has already been answered.
I'm in my 2nd year of CAS and I use a EMF 92 which I love and works great but those 73's sure are looking good.
My question is what manufacturer to go with?
I also plan on getting a short stoke kit when I make the move if that makes a differance?

Howdy, Welcome to CasCity, Most 73's are made by Uberti, there is a new company making them( Chaperal ?), But I haven't had any experience  with them. As Far as Uberti's go, They're all good, I would look to see which importer You like the best( Some have different finish or type of  wood or a better looking Color Case). As far as short stroking there are a number of fine smiths doing great work. Cody Conager, Pioneer Gun Works are two that I would recommend without any reservation. There are others, I just haven't seen or used one of their rifles to make any judgement. Ask around at a local match to see who they'll recommend. Hope this helps, if you need anymore suggestions ask away  ;D

Howdy RR,   You didnt say what branch of CAS you are affiliated with.  If it is SASS then short stroke kits are fine, but if it is NCOWS they are NOT allowed.  Happy hunting for your perfect 73.  What ever type you get will be a shooter I am sure.

My 2 cents, RR. All the Uberti 73s are fine. All you have to do is to decide...carbine or (short) rifle or musket...and caliber.
Regarding the Chapperal 73s the opinions of the gamers from over here in Germany are kind of different regarding their quality out of the box but all can be tuned to reliable performance.
If you can find a well-maintained 73 from Armi san Paolo/Euroarms that could be an alternative. They have the reputation to be closer to the original gun than those of the other 2 manufacturers. ASP/Euroarms made their 73s til the 1990s as carbine (19" barrel) and rifle (24" octagon), in .38/357 and .44-40 cal. I have a carbine from 1982 that was originally .44-40. Had her action tuned and converted to .44 Colt in 2004. She never let me down in a match, even when the lever spring screw broke (my mistake).

I belong to SASS so the short stroke kit sounds like it is legal.
My 92 has the 20'' barrel so I was thinking of going with that.
I was just on Uberti's site and seen what they call the short rifle with 20'' barrel and the carbine with 19'' barrel
It there an advantage or disadvantage to either. What is the differances to consider when picking?
Thanks again guys!

The 19 inch round barrel is a little lighter, I prefer the 20 inch octagon because for me, It swings to the next target smoother and is steadier, less movement when trying to line up the sights.

What Will said, if you're gonna get  73 try a few to see what fits you. You can save some money by ordering it from one of gunsmiths that offers a package deal slicked and ready to go. The Codymatic is one, I got mine from Pioneer Gun Works, and Long Hunter is another just to name a few. Good luck.

Howdy!

I really like the finish and wood on Taylor's Uberti's.

I really like Codymatics.

I really like 20" barrels.

I really like pistol grip stocks.

I really like Pioneer Gunworks.

That's my $0.02 on the topic.  Speaking of money, I don't like the cost of a twenty inch deluxe with professional gun smithing, but it sure makes for the best cowboy rifle one can use in this game.

Trooper224

For over ten years I've owned a standard 24 inch '73 in .45 Colt that's done everything from paper punching to hunting and it's always performed satisfactorily.  That being said, the 20 inch short rifle with a pistol grip stock sure looks sexy.

Relentless Renegade

Ok, I took the advice and went today and tried out the fit of the rifles.
Guess what? The 66 yellowboy with 20'' barrel fit the bill.  8)

The 66 had a better feel than the 73.
Now what are the pros and cons of the 66 and 73?

Thanks,
RR

You are relentless ain't you....<g>

However, a question never asked won't get ya no answer. Me and Old Top like to shoot things as they basicly come outta the box. I mean we will clean up stuff with a polish job, but we are sorta minimalists. That said, here is what I think.

I have 3 92's a 73 and a 66. The 73 action is supposed to be the improvements of the 66. When I got my 66 I found it in a little out of the way gunstore, and the action was like glass outta the box, and it was $690 NIB...I grabbed it. only thing I don't like about it is that puney ladder site. (hard to see with over 40 eyes. ) but it shoots like a charm...it is 38sp..(which can be a problem for some if they wanted a 38/357 like in the 92's. I guess if you put a lot of rounds thru it the brass could streach. but haven't seen anyone with that problem. one of my 92's is a brass frame 45 and I love it.

My 73 also shoots really smooth...and that is the gun I mostly use...partly because it is in 45 and partly because of the sites. But try a bunch of guns if you can, and look for the one that feels good in your hands and when you work the action, it should say "TAKE ME HOME WITH YOU!" and usually I have found if you don't take that one home...you will be sorry later. I know I have been several times.

Hope that helps some.

If you like the 66 get it.  The 73 is a little easier to clean because the side plates are easier to remove.  However, the only real con with the 66 is that all the current production guns use a bent tab on the loading gate to hold the rounds in the magazine.  This gate is junk.  In order to be reliable it has to be reinforced.  If you remove the side plate and immediately solder on a reinforcement it will last as long as a 73 gate.  ALL of the replacement gates that have a bent tab, regardless of who sells them, have to be reinforced.

Four Eyed Floyd

The reason I like my 73 is that it is not fussy about what I feed it. It will shoot 38's (1.43 OAL) or 357 (1.59 OAL) and anything in between. ;D My 92 is very fussy about what it is fed.  :( So now the 92 is getting an action job and a John Wayne type lever. 8) The Marlin is getting an action job and a new safety that looks like a screw.  :o I'll post pictures when they get back. ::)

Yep, there is a reason for my alias. I beleive my wife told me one day I was ****** relentless when I was trying to get a job done.  ;D  Sorta took it from there.
I was at a local match today and a shooter said he heard Uberti would be releasing a 66 version with an action straight from the factory. Anyone one else heard about this ?
