Need help with Uberti 1866 Extraction Problem

My 66 has a problem with extraction / ejection.  The empty gets jammed between between the extractor and the carrier.  Basically the extractor is not releasing the spent round and stops the carrier travel.

The timing doesn't seem to an issue.  The carrier remains at the bottom until the casing has cleared the chamber and the bolt is almost fully extracted.  I need to double pump the lever to get the round to fall clear so the carrier can eject it.

Any suggestions as to where to look for the problem and solution?

If the empty is all the way out of the chamber it is virtually impossible for the extractor to hold the round tight enough to keep it from ejecting when the carrier hits the empty case.  Put an empty case in the chamber and lever the gun with no rounds in the magazine tube.  Does it eject OK?  Sounds more like your rounds are sligthly short and jamming the carrier on its up travel.  What's the OAL of your ammunition?  Also, is the gun stock or does it have a short stroke kit?  If it has a kit what is most likely happenig is the rim of the round in the carrier is hitting the cartridge guide tab at the BOTTOM of the bolt.  If that's the case, you need to fix the timing before you break off that little tab.

Thanks for the reply Pettifogger.

The ejection problem is persistent even without any loaded rounds in the tube.  No problems feeding rounds into the chamber - just ejecting the empties.

I'm thinking the timing is off but not the way you may be thinking.  I'm beginning to think the carrier is rising too late rather than too early.  At least that is my prognosis after disassembling the rifle and manually working the bolt and carrier with the toggles and carrier arm removed.

After reassembly with a temporary shim between the lever and the carrier arm, things seemed to work better.  Now I just need to figure out how to add some material without destroying the carrier arm.

I'll let ya know how things work out.
