I am thinking that my next purchase might be a USFA in .44 special with an extra .44-40 cylinder.  I was wondering if any of you have one of these.  I have never shot a .44 special as most of my experience six-gunning is with .45 Colt or .357 Mag single actions.  Can the USFA in .44 special stand up to stiffer loads around the 1000 fps range or slightly higher?  Perhaps a load of 16.0 grains of 2400.  I currently have a .45 Colt USFA Cowboy and love it.

Nobody bit on this one.

I do not have a USFA in 44-40 and 44 special that I shoot, as my shooters are all in 45 Colt.  However, knowing that standard factory loadings, not cowboy loads, for 44-40 and 45 colt is in the neighborhood of 1000 fps and the 44 special is just below 900fps, coupled with the fact that USFA makes their cylinders just a tiny bit larger than the original Colt cylinders and from new and stronger steel than the original 1st Gen. Colts, 1000fps in 44 special should be a problem.  Of course asking Gary would probably get you nowhere as the factory would state that you should fire only standard factory loadings to remain in any kind of warranties.

With all of that said, you already have the 44-40 moving out there, do you really need the 44 special to do the same?

I like options.  It is like my blackhawk with a .45 Colt and .45 ACP cylinder.  Always good to have a choice.
