Harpo recently knocked out a nice finish on his first holster using Eco-Flo dye. I see these prominently displayed at the Leather Factory here and was wondering if anyone else has had experience with them. If so, what do you think?

Howdy
IMHO
I don't like the Eco-flo dyes. They don't work like regular dyes. It took 4 coats of black to get an almost
black color on a project I did when it first came out.
I am a Tandy/Leather Factory dealer and I won't carry it. I use Fiebings dyes. Much better.

tc, I didn't know you were a Tandy dealer. I have a dye question for ya. What ever happened to the old Omega Dyes they used ta carry? I use Fiebing's dyes nowadays but have always wondered what happened to the Omega dyes I used to use years ago. I sure liked them a lot.

I haven't tried the black yet but the antigue browns(chestnut tan, coffee brown and Briar brown) work OK. I'm in California so I have no choice, the older dyes aren't allowed in anymore.

We are a serice center not a company store. We carry supplies from many vendors.
I believe Omega, who was based in Fort Worth was bought out by Tandy.
I'll ask some of the old timers I know.

I'm in Calif also and you do have a choice. Fiebings has 12 colors that are legal for sale here. Tandy just
didn't want to carry them.

Okay, so I'm new here. Why can't Californians buy Bag-Kote and certain dyes?

Because just about everything causes CANCER in California. Read the labels on just about anything and there is a warning that most anything ya buy will kill a Californian. It must have something to do with living so close to all the salty water out there. It ruins yer constitution.

Or...as far as I can tell, the legislaters in California are protecting their rats like a feller would his livestock. Some a those labels says it has been found to cause cancer in rats so it's made to be illegal in California.

I'll check that out. I was told that all of the oil based dye and Neat-Lac and some of the other dyes were considered high VOC liquids and would not be sold here.  The Eco-Flo seems to work fine so no big deal. It is an air quality thing. We worry about such things here, more than in less populated areas. It is not just California. There used to be quite a few tanneries in the US but most have moved overseas due to EPA regulations, too many chemicals involved.

Fiebings Oil Dye was not oil based. It is alcohol based with oil added.
The oil dyes are not legal in Ca. Fiebings reformulated 12 colors of the regular alcohol dyes to be sold in Ca.
