What is it about Black Powder..

I`ve been shooting with black powder for `bout 11 yrs.

It started outa necessity iffn I wanted ta carry on shootin handguns after the ban the ONLY ones I could shoot here in the UK wuz  Muzzle Stuffers Soooooooooooooo...  After about a year of being totally fed up Annie `O` and me went to Bisley and... enter my first BP smokepole a .36 Whitney...bought a flask, powder, wads etc. etc. and arrived at the range fer my first try........

After about 1/2 an hr I got the thing loaded and all that was going through my mind was.`What the Hell am I doing!! I`n NEVER going to enjoy this..CRAP!! But, Its all we got soooo....

Pointed it downrange and squeezed............ Booooooom!!

The round hit the target which was a surprise in itself but the biggest surprise wuz the SMILE that came back to my face!!
I gotta tell ya`ll It wuz Pure Magic!!
And pards it happens EVERY time I let loose a round down range don't matter iffn its my Navy's my SXS my#97 or even MORE now my #92 ..It will be the Holy Black and.........
That  will be there!!

Rotten Redeye Randy, Pukin' Dog and myself shot the season opener at Ripon today.  We made lots of smoke and big BOOOOMS.  We were the only ones on our posse shootin' Holy Black.  By the time we put our guns away we had lots of pards asking questions.  I expect that you will find some more Darkside converts from that gang soon.

We had more fun, shot our own game and proved that there is more fun in shooting black powder then there is in merely running and gunning.  The clock is less important when there's REAL action happening.

Real Black Powder is about enjoying the real feeling of the 1880s.  I was young again today.

I'm not sure what it is either but, like you folks, I love it.  I have gotten to the point that I really use more of a load than I need in the shotgun just for the effect.  I may not be the fastest out there but I always tell any spectators that I'm "the special effects department" for the posse.

It's just plain fun, that says it all.  Cutting loose with the BOOM, SMOKE, STINK, and FLAME of BP leaves you with a big smile on your face and you no longer get the question, "How did you shoot?" instead you hear, "What was in those guns?"

You CAN have fun without gunpowder; You shoulda seen my Daughter's face when I let rip in her kitchen.  She thought I was shooting rocks!  Actually it was a ball of paper towel wrapped with scotch tape.

Sir Charles,  If I let one rip in my daughters kitchen, she would throw me out on my ear (or rear).  About the problem of throwing rocks, when you let rip, they make products that will help you with the cleanup, a doctor could also be of help as I and most of the other fellows would find this problem embarrassing .  . This leads to another question, would Depends be CAS legal?  The bulkiness might be helpful in keeping the gun belt in place. .

I don't worry too much about SASS legal, as I am an NCOWS member.  I try to stay period correct, and this 5" x 8" model is based on an archeologists recreation of a Roman legionary "onager". I apologize to the PC police for using a 20th century stainless spoon for a throwing arm!

This project was enjoyable to build and my Grandaughters had a lot of fun with it. The wood came from a scrap bin and the torsion bundle was an old shoelace. The result was more effective than I'd have thought possible.

When I decided to switch to BP, I loaded my .45 Colts and .44WCF's with a 40 grain weighed charge of Goex 2Fg.  Yes you can get 40 grains into .45 Colt cases, but it takes a separate step to compress it enough to get a PRS .45 Big Lube boolit into the case, likewise for the .44 WCF and I put 4.3cc's of BP in my 12 gauge hulls.

There was no question of what I was shooting.  One competitor told me that the concussion from the pistols smacked him in the chest and he swore that the ground shook when I touched off the shotgun.

I just smiled.

  There is nothing more fun than being at the shootin range with my Walker,45-70 sharps and 45 colt all loaded to the max with the Mighty Goex. Especially when there are a bunch there shootin there little 9mm and 223. You know pop,pop,pop, then i unleash Thors hammer with the Walker.... BOOOOOM. The looks i get are priceless.
