Wack barrel back to ~3.5-4" long. Reinstall Sight (possibly dovetailed front). Discard Ejector Rod. Modify Sail to look more like a '90 Remmy. Weld end of shortened cylinder pin to Sail.

When pulling the pin to clean or eject empties, the remaining 'sail' will pull with it (which also should make it easy to pull the pin out).

What do you think? Am I missing anything? Any expected hurdles?

Now that I think of it the barrel will be flat on bottom, from where it was milled to receive the sail/ejector guide.

How will you retian the cylinder pin/sail?  Stock, the sail is retained by a screw near the muzzle, and the cylinder pin by the cross bolt, will you retain the crossbolt?  Looks pretty good.

I will soon post photos of my shortened "58", which includes a cylinder gas ring, cylinder pin retainer/rammer hole plug assembly and a 4-1/2 inch barrel.  This gun also includes a Ruger coil and plunger hand spring and a new, harder 4140 steel hand, and a Ruger coil and strut mainspring.

As there are now better leaf springs available, or tunable, the coil mainspring isn't as much a necessity as I found it to be a few years ago.

This is based on an older Stainless Steel Navy Arms Pietta Remington I bought as a project gun a few years ago, and have now almost finisheed cleaning it up and modifying it.  Older Piettas were project guns out of the box, as many people discovered.

I assume the ejector housing hole would bother you by simply removing the ejector from a cimarron sherrifs model. But have you considered reshaping the front of the frame? It might be easier than the 75 project.

Just MY opinion, pard, but I wouldn't butcher a Remington like that.  Too short - no sail.  That's a LOT of the "personality" of a Remington.

Like I said, that's my take on this.  They make some dandy store-keeper / sheriff model Colts if you like 'em like that.

Your mileage may vary!  ;D

I would have agree with SHB, IMHO it would be a shame to mess withe character of the Remmy.  I like the long barrel single action pistols.

Actually, the Remington is the ONLY handgun of the old West period that I actually prefer in the 5.5" barrel length, rather than the full length version.  I think they look really COOL - and most of it is due to the "sail" under the barrel.  Without that, ya might as well have a Colt.  Or a Ruger.  (You could do WORSE however - I LOVE Colts, too!  And shortie Rugers!)  ;)  Just not extra short Remingtons that no longer look like Remingtons!

Thanks for the replies. What I am proposing is welding the base pin to what is left of the sail. So that the pin and sail are one piece, and the little pin that is in the frame will keep the sail from rotating. The existing colt-style base pin plunger that is present in the frame would hold the pin/sail in place.

With this configuration you get the sheriffs snubby with the Remington one-piece frame and action.

I have the tools to do everything but the front site dovetail.

Just an idea I'm kicking around. I think it would look awkward if I left more the the sail there.

Here is a pic with more sail left.

As a gun I kinda like it, as a REMINGTON, I don't.  Just my penny's worth.

Well, a Remmie is a gun...right  :D

Don't get me wrong, I love my long barreled 6 shooters. Just thought it would be a fun little gun. I like the action and frame on a Rem better than a colt.

Hey, Skinny P - Not everybody's hand fits a Colt - some like the Remingtons.  I can work with both.  The Colt fits my hand a tad better; I like the look of the Remingtons a tad better.

Extend that sail out to under the sight and ya may convince ME!  ;D

Although I think you should do what you like, I must admit I like the sail on.

Yeah, it looks more like a Remmy, but would take more smithing to fit. I'm just kicking ideas around. It shore shoots sweet with the 5.5" barrel it has now. I wonder if an Uberti Colt threads would fit. I could drop an Uberti Colt Sherrifs barrel in.

I vote for the one in Reply #11.

Ya gotta have a sail.  ;D

Black Powder

Can you rig it so the sail is still full length?  Then sharpen it to a point...

While it doesn't ring my bell, I say that if the fit & feel of the Remmy suits you better than the Colt, and you're so inclined to make a snubby, go for it.
