I've been seeing, in B Westerns, what appears to be some sort of press on top of safes. I finally got a picture of one. Anyone know what this thing is?

Slim,

Could it be a printing press?  I don't know how early they were used, but banks used to have boilerplate contracts with blanks for names, dates, amounts, and other particulars.  These would have been more common before computers and word processing.

A press could have been made that produced such a form so that it would not have to have been completely hand written.

This is pure conjecture on my part, but it seems plausible.

It looks like either a bookpress used to flatten books when bookmaking, or similar presses used when making prints to force the paper against the plate or stone.

It's a book press.
