There seems to be some crontroversy about bandoleers.  I have been looking for a canvas shotgun bandoleer or a belt.  Those bloody leather shotgun belts are PRICEY!  So I'm looking for either a canvas shotgun belt, or bandoleer and not having any luck.  I can find nylon ones up the hoo-ha, but no canvas ones.  And....is a canvas shotgun bandoleer period correct?  So any help you can give me here will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Forty Rod

Call Walker 47 (they have an ad in the Chronicle).  There's a guy there who can make one for you and his prices are reasonable.

Can't recall his name right off, but Andy/ Nasty nick, the owner, can put you in toucn.

BTW, they look great (make sure you get one long enough), but I find them about as pratical as a barb wire jock strap for CAS.

I use one for hunting...carries fifteen rounds of .30-40 Krag, fifteen rounds of .45 Colt, and ten rounds of 12 gauge.

Weighs about as much as a good quarter horse when it's full.  It almost never is.  I don't need that much ammo for a hunting trip.

People like me are the reason people like you have the right to bitch about people like me.

I dunno what is "controversial" about them, but just about any leathermaker who makes a canvas gunbelt can make you a canvas bandoleer.

If you're going for a bandito look, it's canvas or leather ammo belts strapped across the chest, not bandoleers.
Adios,

One of my orygun pards uses a canvas one,and the shells come out pretty easy.Holds a whole match-worth of shotshells. Most folks figure they slow ya down, but not all of us are out to win the blue ribbon.Just dont tie it down...that's a no-no.

Arapaho,

Check out San Pedro Saddlery, they have a canvas one under accessorys for 75, looks pretty good to me.

If I can lay my hands on a strip of canvas webbing...say two inches by a few feet...I can make up my own bandoleer.  I have a sewing machine and I know how to operate it.  I think, before I buy a commercial one...I'll have a go at building my own and see what happens.

If yer home-made version doesn't work, try Cabellas. I seem to recall that they have a decent canvas one at a fair price.  Probably made by TripleK Leather.

Steel Horse:  Thanks for the tip on this.  Went to the Cabela's site and found one shotgun bandoleer.  Unfortunately it's made of nylon...which is not period correct, so....I'm still on block one.

You can get the canvas from a fire hose, not the type used on fire trucks but the unlined hose used for fire hose stations in buildings. These hoses are regularly replaced and are usually unused.

You can get them from Fire Sprinkler Companies, Testing Companies and sometimes from Fire Departments.

What you are looking for is 1 1/2" unlined hose.

Howdy all,

I've found that volunteer fire departments are a good source of fire hose.  It is the lined kind, and we used it for baseball fields and not bandoleers, but it was free and VFDs are good guys.  Plus they might have a source for the unlined.

But, in all likelihood, you'll find it easier and cheaper to use an established saddlery, like San Pedro.
Adios,

Hey Arapahoo hoo.  When we get together shootin Satidee I will bring my canvas belt from Big Ed.  Hard to beat, but you might be able to sew yer own.  The neighbors have too many cats, so you can get some good thread.

DONE DEAL!  I now have a canvas scattergun shell belt!  The white belt is a 2 inch wide, canvas patient handling belt from a hospital.  The black one is an old Army pants belt I had.  I did a little sewing and came up with my belt.  It holds only 19 rounds, but that'll cover me for a couple stages.  The next project is getting it dyed black and getting another buckle to replace the one that's on there.
