Taking guff for shooting 2 gun

In my state, (Iowa), I take a lot of guff for shooting "working cowboy". All clubs in my state allow working cowboy, NCOWS, SASS & Independents. People give me a hard time for shooting working cowboy, they know I have an armory of guns to choose from, & working cowboy id "for someone just starting out in the game". To me wearing uniforms & shooting 2 guns is more authentic. My last match, I shot working cowboy with cap & ball, & a flap holster, (cross draw). It didn't make any difference to me, ended the match with 1 miss. The only shoot in the sate when I will be shooting 4 guns is the state SASS match. Only time out of state will be HOW,

For whatever reason, there will always be those who try to get others to change, poor things. Don't get angry, just smile, nod and go have fun.

I like 2 Gun Shoots and 4 Gun Shoots.  The whole 2 Guns Shoot is a novelty around here so folks tend to like them.  I had an WONDERFUL time at the Kansas State GAF Match and that was a two gun format.  I even have specific guns for 2 gun shoots.  That is when I plan to really Cavalry out.  You are right Brian, for a uniform, a 2 gun shoot just feels right.

What we are doing the first weekent of August is having a SASS day on saturdya with stages designed for 4 guns and a G.A.F. day on Sunday with stages designed for 2 guns.  each day will be a seperate event but I hope most people will comeand shoot both days to get the fun of both.
I thnk the 2 gun setup is bete suted to those in uniform.  maybe we could use the GAF titles of Scout for those shooting pistol and pistol caliber rifle and then ofer the Milita and Buffalo scout classes as well at a regular match.

I shoot with Dusty at times and I like watching him shoot in his uniforms 2 guns or 4 dont matter to me I have shot the working cowboy class before and kind of like it but agree that would be for authentic if I was in uniform.  Maybe someday I will get a uniform but it shouldnt matter how many guns you shoot as long as you have FUN aint that we are here for anyway

Working cowboy is the most poplular category at the 2 NCOWS groups I shoot with.  You are in the MAJORITY and not the minority.  Just tell them you are more "authentic" with your 2 guns.  Heck most people back then couldnt afford one gun much less more than 2.

:o You're not going to be in Nebraska in October?

Like Dusty I have a safe that's full. I didn't start shooting CAS untill I had more than enough guns to compete. Sometimes I shoot 2, sometimes I shoot 4. I want to do the best I can but winning isn't really what motivates me. I've placed at the top and I've placed at the bottom and had fun both places. I shoot for fun, and I don't worry about what the other guy is doing.

To further add to what Don said, the Working Cowboy class has also been the most popular at the last (I believe) three NCOWS National matches.

Pitspitr, my statement about out of state was when I have to shoot 4 guns. I will be at the muster.

I, like the others have more than enough guns to play any game that anyone can dream up. But, I believe one pistol and one rifle to be the authentic. I'd forget the shotgun altogether.

My challenge still stands.

Find a primary source documentation of someone using two long guns (rifle & shotgun) in a gunfight. ;)

Back east here, SASS is about the only outfit if you want to shoot CAS - and that means that every match, and just about every stage in every match, is set up for 4 guns.  I can't remember the last time I went to a local match and shot less than 4 guns for a stage.

I'm glad Maj Matt set the tone for the first and following GAF Musters by limiting the number of guns to only two - and having us do a few reloads as might have been done when in a combat situation of the times.  Besides, I'm not overly fond of the shotgun so if I don't have to shoot one I'm not exactly unhappy about it.

I do love my shotguns, but for authenticity sake the 2 gun setup is more accurate when in uniform.

If'n I was pertending to be a barkeep, railroad guard or something like that the shotgun pistol combo is probably just as accurate

No if'n we were in the Great War Shooting society - a 2 gun setup of a 1911 and a 1897 with bayonet would be a fine historically correct set-up.  Maxim's  and Chauchats for everone!!

Well I like 4 gun shoots, but my heart belongs to two gun shoots.  You never did read about a trooper riding into battle with 2 pistols a rifle and a shotgun....although I believe that the boys at the Little Big Horn wish they did....

It's fun but it is different.  But the secret is the reloading.  That's where I think NCOWS Working Cowboy may not get it right for me.  I like the 10 pistol shots, but that is just me...By the way, that was not an NCOWS bash because I really like shooying with the KVC...

Ok I realize I quoted you slightly out of context, but just for the sake of argument... ::) ;D

From the New York Times January 26, 1919, "Leander Herron of St. Paul Neb., has just won a Congressional gold Medal [CMH-JMD]for bravery in 1868." "The story of the incident on which the award is based is told in the Modern Woodman.
Herron, now 70 years old, was a corporal of Company A, Third United States Infantry. With a pistol in each hand, he rode directly through a band of 'dog soldier' Indians and rescued a Government wagon train which was under attack."

For me variety is the spice of life. I like shooting 4 gun shoots (though like Gen. Scout I'm not over fond of shotguns) but I like shooting 2 gun shoots as well. If I had to choose between the 2 formats I'd take the GAF Grand muster 2 gun shoot everytime.

Even at our monthly SASS match, we have a category for those who want to shoot one six-shooter & their rifle only.  We just score them separately.
