Just got back from my first ever fishing trip.

An old school friend just bought a 50 ft motor boat and invited a few of us old friends out for a few days.

Here is me who has never in his 49 years of life, tried fishing.

I also suffer terribly from seasickness.

Took lots of seasick piulls and managed 3 days out in the boat.

I even caught a couple of snappers, and they were delicious.

Fresh crayfish for lunches.

Leaving the area the harbour was in we had to drive through parkland.

Spotted a young, wild pig just in from the road side.

Had my M1 carbine with me and at 50yards it dropped this very welcome addition to my pantry.

Weighed in at 50 lbs of free pork.

nextdoor neighbour is going to smoke the bacon for me and another mate (a butcher) is going to prep all the cuts.

All in I would say that I had a very good weekend.

Next weekend I head off down to a place called Raglan in the Waikato district. Farmers there are having massive problems with rabbits and possums.

Just picked up 400 .22LR rounds and a hunting lamp.

Will be doing my best to eradicate as many of these pests as possible.

Weekend after off to another area to help deplete the numbers of wild goats.

This month is shaping up to be a very good one.

Dang, Cousin, you must be excited to double post that sucker.

I'm not sure what makes me more jealous, the fishin', the huntin', or the fact that you have an M-1 carbine.

Good goin' and congratulations.

Cousin Forty,

Yep it was a fine weekend but that is not the reason for the double post. My connection to internet is playing up and I accidently double clicked the post button.

It is real nice to be back into hunting. Hoping to go after some deer later in the year. Spent a long time off sick, a few years back, and have only just started to regain enough fitness to think of going back into the bush here in NZ.

My little M1 is one of my prized rifles. Always wanted one and got a good one here. Havent tried much over 150 yards but it is sweet to there. Spent the last year trying to get all the makings together so that I can reload for this rifle. Hardest part is getting the brass. Not much of it here in NZ. Now I have to find one of them brass catcher things that clip to the side, sot that I dont loose the little brass that I have managed to get. Loaded ammo for this rifle costs almost $1 NZ per round.  I met a lad here in NZ who collects these rifles and he sold me one that wasnt in great collecing order but good to use for the bush, plinking and hunting light animals. He has about 20 M1 carbines and a couple of M2 carbines.

Had an M-2 in 'Nam.  Hell for fast and 100% reliable.  Wouldn't mind one again...and a M-1 Thompson...but I'll never see the day I can.

If Forty Rod had a M-2 Carrbean and a M-1 Thompson I don't think it would stay quiet around here very long. ;D

The carbine was my "bird gun" for when I was hoppin' round in choppers and light fixed wing planes..."birds".  During those times the Tommy gun was in my war bag with the butt removed (Yes, you can too on an M-1 or M-A1.  Takes a screwdriver is all.)

The Tommy was my "ground gun" for when we was convoyin', patrollin', or just out boondockin' around.  The carbine rode in back at those times.

Both had their virtues an' faults.

The Carbine was fast...abour 800 rpm...and a little more accurate.  The Tommy was slower...maybe 400-450 rpm...but hit harder.  The bigger slug punched through foliage better.

Carbine was just under 7lbs wth a 30 round mag.  The Tommy was closer to 13 lbs with the same number of rounds.

Both were 100% reliable under every condition I used them in.

Loved 'em both.  Still do.

Amateur hunting for what?

I thought everything big enough to use that on was extinct.
