I was wondering if anyone out there had an Adler 30-15 sewing machine instruction book? I have decided to play with mine a little bit and at least learn how to use the thing, but....... no instructions.
Now this is the old green Adler with the big rocking arm on top. Tried the net, but didnt find anything that old. Thanks. DM

Dalton:

I could not find any actual references to this machine other than some listings in German on the Durkopp Adler main site.  It was made for the shoe industry and from your description it sounds like a "patch machine" (has a pivoting beam on top of the machine and a very thin arm).  Anyway try to contact Durkopp directly and maybe they can get you a manual.

Marvelous Outrider! I called and they scanned an old copy and sent it to me via email. The lady kept saying that it is an ooollld machine. Started making them in 1900. Thanks. DM

Wow...1900  I knew it was old but never dreamed it was that old.  I am glad I was able to help.

By the way..you may already know this but ADLER is German for Eagle.

I did NOT know that Outrider! Thanks again!
The lady couldnt tell me when it ended production, but mine is pretty old. I like the handcrank on the front of it, and the long slender arm is nice for making all kinds of room. From what I can tell its one of a few 360 degree machines. DM

Dalton:

Go to the Artisan site:  artisansew.com and click on the leather machines.  at the end there is one model called the 29-173 which I think is like yours...they still make this design.  It also has a 360 degree trun on the presser foot

One thing about these old sewing machines, Adler, Singer, etc., they are almost indestructible and can last almost forever. United Space Boosters, Inc. (USBI) utilized a bunch of old Singers to repair and refurbish the nylon ribbon parachutes used to recover the Space Shuttle solid rocket boosters, until they flat couldn't get parts for the machines! They were sewing nylon straps about 1/4" or more thick to each other (crosswise) for the canopies of the 136 ft. diameter main chutes! Odd leftover pieces of the these "ribbons" made great tow cables for automobiles (for those of us who could get a few feet).  ;)
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!
