Howdy Tom,

Welcome to the Darkside.  What kind of powder will you be shooting.  Your mold choice is influenced by your choice of powder.

Here's a cartridge case drawing for the 44 S&W American.  It takes a healed bullet design.  Hope that helps.

I have never tried it, but .41 S&W Mag cases, cut down, are the closest in size.  DD is right, the cartridge was designed for a heeled bullet.

Look up Buffalo Arms, or GADD custom cartridges.  NEI has an extensive line of molds.  The old Lyman mold was 429478.

What firearm are you trying to feed?
NCOWS #1154, SCORRS, STORM, BROW, 1860 Henry, Dirty Rat 502, CHINOOK COUNTRY

No guns were chambered for .44 American during the smokeless era, hence ALWAYS use real BP or a BP sub. Slug the chamber mouths to determine a good fit. As mentioned, http://www.neihandtools.com/ makes a .44 heel based bullet mould, but it is for the .44 Colt, which has a larger diameter. The .44 American had a nominal groove diameter of approx. 0.432. You will probably have to have a custom mould made. More importantly, you will need a proper crimping tool for heel based bullets and there is only one place I know of that makes one: http://www.oldwestbulletmoulds.com/. He can make a mould as well for you.

Vous entreprenez une aventure chère ! ! Bonne chance ! !  ;)

Howdy, for a TRUE .44 American (heeled bullet) I'd contact Bernie Rowles at Old West Bullet Moulds (google him).  He specializes in oddballs and specifically mentions heeled bullet molds and the all important heeled bullet crimp dies.  His work is fantastic.

Thank you all, very friendly......

Problem is The special shape of the bullet, the diameter is less important at the base, the loading specifity of this handgun, see below the cartridge difference..........
