Does anyone use pigmented neatsfoot oil and if so any good suppliers out there?

I've made my own, but it gave limited success. Darker colors were a no-go but for a tint, it was outstanding. Of course, with the right dye it might be fine. What I got colored with it was really nice. Here's a pic of one colored that way. I don't have a picture of the whole thing but this shows the color nicely.

I use Fiebings Leather Stain in oil all the time, Not antique stain. It come in Walnut, Golden Oak Cherry
and Black. I've not used the black. You can use regular dye mixed with oil but the stain is stronger.

P.S.
Just remember the color it goes on is not what it will dry to.

Just like Will was saying, it works real well as a tint , with me , I've been doing this with extra Virgin Olive Oil, and a 3"x 3" piece of sheep skin lambs wool, you can mix a little dye with a little oil, and mix it up together , or you can dab a little oil on your wool pad and then in some dye , you just have to play with it until you get the look you're after, I did this with the rig I did the old fashion walnut dye on, and the last two holsters I've made , and I've been real happy with the results. Hope this was some help, I think you should be able to do the same thing with Neatsfoot Oil. 8)I used Fiebings Dark Brown dye, the spirit dye , the kind you can thin with alcohol, which I'm going to miss when I run out of it , we can't get this dye in California anymore. :( :o ??? :P :'( Like WC said you can get the Fiebings leather stain in oil, and I know he likes the results with this product too.

I've been making oil stains on and off for years and I do two things:
1) Use a blender to mix the two
2) Add some lecithin which is an emulsifier - I know it's not water and oil being mixed but the lecithin does help.
3) Weaver leather has or at least did have an oil stain that you mix with oil for a nice brown.
4) I like the Lexol Non-Greasy Neats Foot
aka Nolan Sackett

I have also been making my own stains for years ,by mixing dyes with John Deere vegtable hydralic oil its much cheaper than leather oiils and works really well.

As I recall, it was a mix of Fiebeings dark brown, light brown and russet. I just kept adding and trying until I got the color I wanted. I wish I had a more specific recipe because I'd love to have more of it. Next time I'll measure as I add.

Sometime back Kid Cavalier was a regular poster and posted a picture of some really attractive holsters.  When I asked him about the finnish he had used, he stated that it was neetsfoot oil with the darkening agent from Weaver, possibly as mentioned by Chuck.

I have the "brown stain" sold by weaver.  It is good for getting different shades of "brown"  and sometimes a kind of muddy color.  What I am looking for is a reddish brown like seen on holsters and belts from El Paso Saddlery and Texas Jack's.  I have a Texas Jack belt here now and it is definately an oil finish but with a reddish tint.

Howdy Outridder,

I don't mean to change the subject , but I keep hearing Weaver mentioned, do they have a web site , and what do they sell , you say you got some brown stain from Weaver , do they have a full line of products , just wondered, back to the color, when I did my carved Cheyenne holster , I got that orangest red color , by doing the old time walnut dye for four days , and then when dry , I used Fiebings dark brown dye reduced by 50%, and then mixed it in with a little extra Virgin Olive Oil, then I just wipped it on and let set for just a little bit , then wipped it off , I kept doing this until I got the depth and color I was looking for , you might want to try this on some scraps, it might be what your looking four , Chuck Burrows uses Gum Tragachant after conditioning the leather, and he says it will bring out some of the red , and I find it does just that. Good luck Pard , finding the color your looking for can be a real experience, to say the least. ??? ::) :o

WC:

Ya done saved the day.  I ordered the oilstain that you referred to and the Cherry worked out perfectly.. So anyone interested in getting some stain...not antique stain  here is the addy:

Peas & Corn Co., Inc.
991 Flatwoods Trail
Glennville, GA.  30427

www.peasandcorn.com

They sell supplies for the shoe industry and have most of the stains that I have not seen at Tandy, Hide Crafter, or at Weaver.

I ordered the Golden Oak, the Walnut, and the Cherry.  All three gave some great looking samples but I havn't tried to mix them yet

Thanks for the link, Outrider. I couldn't find the cherry dye, though. Where was it on the site. I found a bunch of great dyes but not the one you mentioned. Thanks.

mARSHAL wILL , it's under stains not dyes, you just needed to go down the list a little further.

Marshal:

As Ten Wolves points out it is listed under stains...and these stains really blend in very nicely.  I made a small sample of each one last night and just with a little hand stirring they blended with the oil right off.  WC, is correct though.  it dries alot lighter than when you first apply it.

WC...thanks again.

I just finished a practice holster using Neets Foot Oil tinted with Fiebings Tan Oil Dye. This holster has three coats of tinted Neets Foot Oil applied. After wet-molding the holster I applied several coats of Bag-Kote.
