If you look in the back 'pages' of this forum and those of the 'NCOWS' forum - you'll find numerous posts regarding sack suits, including one on how to make your own by converting a modern-made suit.

There'll even be links to vendors.

Happy researching...

This is your best bet.  Hit the thrift stores and you can probably pick one of for less that $ 5.00.  Conversion is pretty easy.

Howdy Silas,

Call Jean at James Country Mercantile [816-781-9473] and tell her the type of plaid wool you are looking for.  She usually has several patterns on hand.  She had 2 sack suits made for me.  Not a long wait either.

The best made sack suits I've found come from Walton & Taylor in Dallas, they offer a good selection of period materials and they go the extra mile to finish them with hand sewn buttonholes, their prices are quite reasonable too.

I have seen Walton and Taylors' website but when I  have emailed them the email would't go thru and the Phone was not in service. Have you recently been in contact with them?

I've had a couple of pairs of trousers quite recently, but I too have had problems making contact with them in the past.
All told I've had a dress shirts, travel shirt, sack coat, two vests and three pairs of trousers, I've not found any to match their historical acuracy and quallity, in fact I've sold off what I had previously.
All I can say is if you can get hold of them it's worth it.

Silas,

River Junction is back making sack suits again and they are authentic.

Here is the site link     http://www.riverjunction.com/catalog/scoat/menscoats.html

After you get there click on the sack suit and it will show you some plaids that are available.

I hope this helps.

Howdy,

James Country Mercantile can make both early [1860- 1873] and later [1878] style sack suits.  I have several that they have made and am happy with their products.  Talk to Jean!  She will make up your fabric if you have some or furnish the complete suit.  They are in Liberty, MO and are open 11 am to 6 pm M - F and 9 to 5 on Saturday.  The phone number is 816-781-9473.  They have a web site.  They are real good folks to work with!
