I want to make a money belt, but can't seem to locate 3-4 oz calf skin. It would be nice to find some undyed, pebble grain.  I need something on the order of 44-48" long and about 6" wide (will be folded to about 3, or less").

Any suggestions appreciated.  I've checked most of the usual sources but 1.5-2 oz is all that I have found.

Thanks

Well apparently not many folks are making these belts out of calf skin any more. So, let me re-phrase my question.

What material are you guys making your money belts out of?  Just light weight cow hide?

The current Money Belt thread makes no mention of any material other than calf-skin, nor can I find any other reference in the archives. Likewise, I see nothing but calf skin used in the pics in Packing Iron, but maybe I have overlooked something.

Thanks

I use vegi tan 4 to 5 ounce  0r 5 to 6 0unce leather I've also used oil tanned leather in the same weight leather, some use a crome tanned leather , but the crome tanned can be hard on brass, and leather when put together, it can cause verigris, it's fine if you don't want bullit loops, and it's known to last a long time, hope this helped. :D 8)

I have made them from 4/5oz cowhide but by far the prettiest are made from chap and heavy upholstery leathers.  I always caution anyone to never leave guns, ammo, loading flasks, etc. in leather beyond actual use, even with veggy tan.  I have seen the oil soaked mass market holsters ruin a guns finish overnight and they claim to be veggy tanned!

OH, almost forgot, at one time Tandy was cataloging a mature calf skin that may have been what you are looking for.  Do not have my catalog handy at the moment but you might want to check on it.

Tandy does have calf skin, but 1.5-2 oz. A little too light for a money belt, I would think.

I want to stick to 3-4 oz, if possible. This weight is generally available in cow hide, but I cannot find it in calf hide.

Thanks.

Are you wanting to make a money cartridge belt , or Gentlemans , under cover money belt, you might want to talk to Cowboy WC, he would have the knowledge of what you need and where you might be able to get it , or he might be able to get for you.         http://www.leatherbywc.com/

I was thinking about a belt w/o cartridge loops, about 2-2.5", wide, aged/antiqued with some spots and perhaps a concho or two, to match a pair of Calif. Patterns I'm making. I'll keep looking for a while longer and if I find nothing I will probably contact Chuck Burrows who is only 40 or so miles from me. I really don't want to bother him unless I have to as I'm sure he is quite busy.

I pulled out my Tandy catalog yesterday afternoon, while in the shop, and found the mature calf skins I was referring to.  They call it TOOLING KIP SIDES #9155-00 and the weight is indeed lighter than I remembered, 2.5/3oz.
