USFA 9mm Luger SAA just for fun.
« on: January 29, 2008, 12:49:51 PM »
I wouldn't mind seeing a 9mm Luger chambered version to commemorate the pesky little cartridge.  I understand Colt made a few of these for the European market and maybe USFA could make one with a spare .38 Special cylinder.  What do you all think?

What do I think?

Yeouchhhh!  That would be like wearing a striped tie on a checkered chirt.  And throw in some yellow pants.

The 9mm has no business in the traditional world of SAAs.  That cartridge speaks of 20th Century semi-autos, military and police.

That's just what I think.

Hey, you forgot the white patent leather shoes with that outfit. ;D  Maybe as some kind of commemorative or limited run as it sure would make for some cheap shooting.  The 9mm Luger was first produced in 1902 so it is technically a 20th Century cartridge.  Recoil sure would be light with it though.

If they were to do it at all it would probably would be more marketable to make a .357 with a spare 9mm cylinder.  Some might find the three cartridge capability appealing.

They could do that, but I would hope they make the bore tight .355" instead of .357" like some of the early Colt Pythons so accuracy with the 9mm doesn't fall off and with the 38/357 it would be nice and tight for accuracy.

How about a 32-20 chambered edition, in all barrel lengths.  Tighten the bore to .309, turning the 32-20 lead bullet round into a tack driver...and add an 8mm Nambu cylinder to the set.  Perhaps a rollmark with Old Glory crossed with the Rising Sun...
-or- on second thought, just make 'em as they are currently offered and keep the prices in line on the best traditional Single Action made anywhere.  Sorry guys, after following this thread I just couldn't help myself.  You all enjoy your weekends.

Me too, until the mention of the 8mm Nambu.  Now there's an idea!

Anything that mentions the Nambu gets a laugh out of me.

I've got it, commemoratives for the European 20th century cartridges, .30 Luger, 9mm Largo, 9mm Bergman, 9mm Kurtz, .455 Webley Automatic and 9mm Gilsenti?   ;)

Wow, they make a 9mm cylinder! Cool, I'll have to check it out.

Doesn't make sense to me. They quit making one in .357 Mag years ago, because as I was told, it was a non-traditional modern caliber, but here they are making them in 9mm. What gives?

That business about not making a .357 because it is not a "traditional caliber" doesn't make sense to me either.  So what?  Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Colt turn out a few 1st generation .357 SAA's back in the mid to late 30's?
Given the choice between a gun that can only shoot .38's or a .357 that can shoot both, I'd take the .357 any day.

I believe the lack of a .357 Magnum had something to do with the conical firing pin and the .357 Magnum cartridge.  I "think" I remember reading some comments from Gary Granger about this issue.

AJD,
You are correct.  The conical firing pin doesn't work well with the .357 due to the larger size of the hole in the firing pin bushing.  A .357 would require a concave firing pin and a different bushing.  A relatively easy fix.

Work with a .38 special and 9mm, what's the difference? If they work with those two, why not .357?

I believe the .357 mag was available in the 1935 Colt SAA.  Colt also was able to make a handful of 2nd. gen. SAA in .41 magnum.  I would think with today's metallurgy it would be an easy fix.

From what Gary said, and I have no personal experience to refute it, the larger hole in the bushing that is required for the conical firing pin can cause the primer to back out into the hole, causing the gun to jamb.  Apparently this is caused by the greater pressures generated by the .357 cartridge.

It'd be a simple fix if that is the case.
