I have a Uberti-EMF (Hartford Model) SAA in .45 LC. For some reason, when I load factory ammo, and set about to fire 6 rounds down range, only about half the rounds fire. I always assumed a revolver to be the ultimate in reliablity when it comes to expecting the cartridge to fire when the hammer falls, but with this pistol...that is not the case. At first I thought the cylinder base pin was too far back towards the hammer causing the firing pin to not contact the primers...but I am able to pull it forward in beween shots. This doesn't seem to be the problem. I sent it back to EMF once before, but they sent it back w/same problem. HELP!

It may be there is too much cylinder head space and a shim or something needs to be added on the cylinder pin/bushing area to tighten it up.  Have you tried replacing the base pin with a Colt or USFA base pin or grind down the original part so it won't go into safety?  Check to see if the firing pin hole area has been peened as it is easily corrected with some India stones.  How about the mainspring, is it full strength or lightened?  Just a few ideas on what might be wrong.

Also check the primers to see if they are:

1) Fairly well-centered or off to the edge;
2) Nice solid hits or just "dimples" in the primer face.

Is this a new or used gun?
Is it always the same chambers that don't fire?

Sounds like you have a problem , if after trying what these other pards have spoke on , I think you need to call E.M.F. they have excellent service , if you sent the gun to them before , I'm surprised it didn't get fixed. but if it is not the ammo , then you need to send the gun back to them, Talk to Debbie, Don, Gary or Becky , make sure you write a good explanation of what the gun is doing , when you send the gun back . To tell you the truth, it sounds like a weak hammer spring, if you didn't put a lighter spring in , it could still be a bad spring, just my thoughts on the matter, if it's the hammer spring you can fix this youself, if your handy

I don't think it's the ammo. I only use Ultramax factory cowboy ammo in all my cowboy guns...and this is the only one that has given me this problem. The gun is essentially brand new, as I have only fired it twice. Both times it failed to reliably fire all six rounds in the cylinder. The first time I sent it back, Emf told me to send it a place called Pisco in Oregon. I don't think they did anything at all to it, and simply sent it back. (kinda like soome auto mechanics) I did speak with Becky today at Emf and plan to send it back. It really pisses me off that you can expect a solid product anymore in this country.

Hang in there pard , your gun is in good hands, that place in Oregon did some work on one of mine , and did a good job of it , just like all the Firearms Co. they all have problems once in a while, and that goes for Colt and USFA, the important thing is , that they stand back of their guns, and make things right ,I'm not getting on the band wagon for E.M.F., but it's a good honest Company , and they have always treated me well, so give them a chance, did you ever try a different brand of ammo, just curius? Also did you send a letter explanning your problem ,( sometimes,  I'm told they just get a gun , and they don't have a clue what the problem is)if you did they will probably try different ammo in it .

ten wolves...yes, I will try them. I have tried different factory ammo, and same deal. thanks for the advice.

Make sure you STRESS the fact that you HAVE tried other factory ammos.  Sometimes, sending some ammo (empty cases) of the types you've tried can help.

Since you only use factory ammo, it shouldn't be a problem, but DON"T mention any use of reloads as it can void the warranty if THEY choose to.

Well, I called EMF and they said they couldn't help me cause the pistol was purchased over two years ago and is outside the warranty. I spoke w/Becky. So...guess I'll send it to a smith.

Hello M14MSGT

Sorry to hear your gun is out of warranty Pard  >:( :(, but you can still get it fixed at the smith  ;), and hopefully it will just be a miner problem  ;D, and an easy fix  :o. Good luck with this , and let us know how it comes out. :-\

Well, that really sucks!

Was it still in warranty the 1st time you sent it in?  You know - when they didn't fix it, but DID have it?  >:(

Shame on them.  I really expected better from EMF.  That DOESN'T sound like anything but a manufacturing defect after you rule out the ammo possibility.

Update - Tenwolves put a call into Becky of EMF on my behalf (thanks Tenwolves)...and I received a call yesterday from Becky saying she talked with one of their gunsmiths and she was sending me (for free) a new base pin and some springs and screw and that hopefully would fix the problem. I have to say, that's pretty good customer service.  :)

Hello M14MSGT

I'm glad things are going to be resolved for you , Becky called me from E.M.F. this morning and told me she talk to you , and that she was sending you new parts, see what I mean about this Company , they go the extra mile to keep there customers happy. I'd say this calls for a big YE HA FOR E.M.F. AND THE PEOPLE THAT WORK FOR THEM, :o :o ;D ;D

Well!

I'll have to modify my new opinion of EMF some.  The way it seems to be getting handled is more like what I EXPECTED to see from this good company.

M14 guy, I'm happy for ya, pard.

In the end as long as they make it right and stand behind the product they will get my business.  Colt should learn a thing or two from USFA and the Italian import sellers. :-X

Black Powder

Nice job, EMF.  I'm new and will be making some required purchases as the budget permits.  I expect to include EMF because I have been struck by just how strong a reputation they have in delivering customer satisfaction.  Sounds like in this case, they valued this customer and their reputation and so they did something that they saw as the right thing to do to satsify both.  That, my friends, is pretty remarkable today (old school) and therefore commendable.  And yes, I'll remember it.

I've got my excuses and I'm stickin' to 'em.

m14 you said you can pull the base pin foward after shooting.
there is two notches in the base pin, the retaining pin locks in the first notch for shooting,
the second is the saftey notch, sounds like the retainer is not locking into either notch
