Replacing Iron Sights on a Marlin?

I want to remove the cockeyed-looking Marble rear buckhorn that looks like it's doing its own little thing at a 5% off angle and put on a Lyman rear ladder sight that will be both cooler and symmetrical.  I figure that even if the Marble sight hits point of impact at say 50 yards, it's only going to do that at one set distance (law of non-parallel lines; they only intersect at one point.  Right?)

How is sight replacement done?  Is this just tapping with a synthetic hammer and knocking the old sight out?  Makes me wonder how sights stay in if it's this easy.  Just by friction?

Anyone know?

Thanks.

Howdy,

A couple of things..
Yes, the sight is tapped out, from the right to the left.  The tight fit and slight narrowing seems to do a solid job of holding the sights.

Before you do too much, you might want to check that the dovetail is properly cut.  If the sight is off by a few degrees, it could be the sight or it could be the mount.  If the dovetail is cut poorly, then you will need to send the rifle back to Marlin.

Adios,

Adios,

Thanks, Finn.  Looks like a hard call.  If I get aftermarket sights and modify the gun, then out goes the warranty.  If I send it in to Marlin, that's another month and a half at least of waiting, then no guarantee that their fix will be any better.  Very tempted to just order that Lyman Ladder sight and take my chances with tapping that in and then tapping the front sight leftwards into better alignment (hoping it will still be firm and not loose).

Now front sights were meant to be tapped either left or right for windage adjustments.  Is that correct?  Maybe a little to the left or right they still stay firmly affixed.

Tang rear sights are jim-dandy, especially when you get over 45 or so. You can fill the slot in your barrel with a sight slot blank from Brownell's.

I swapped on to a tang recently.  I really like it better.
