Don't tell anybody, but the secret is to use the aluminum pan w/o the holes in the bottom...  ;D

I have to go rest now. Today is a Holiday.
Down here we chose to forego MLK day...........kids had to go to school because we took an extra day at the stock show!

Good work Kev,...I hope you have fun doing this project .

Chances are you won't have it done by GroundHog day, though,...you may have to explain that to Woody. ::)

Do the cylinders line up good with the bore?
Just curious as to how often folks run into cyl./bore misalignment with the Italian replicas.

I have removed a couple postings from this thread that contributed nothing and could have degenerated into an argument. Until recently everyone on this forum has been very civil with each other since day one. Please let us return to that mode.

Nice,....I like the way the baking soda gives the brass a old dull appearance.  ;)

Lookin good. I have a similar project in mind. I'm interested in seeing what type of sight, and how to install.

I think you are cutting yerself a BIT SHORT :o
Are you measuring from the breech end (in front of the cylinder) or from the FRONT of the frame? ::)

I thought you might enjoy this pic of a couple of "shorty's"

Nice photo.

Is there any good article about Remingtons inside that issue?

Just a blurb about the cover, that says the top one in a 36 Police and the bottom a 44, from unknown collection!

There is a VERY COOL article on combustible cartridges though :o

Baking soda is an acid.  ???  It turns brass to a darkened color and removes some of the shine. Time will tell how dark. I put it in a glass jar so I can wiggle the jar and see the result as I'm doing this procedure. I left this triggerguard in for 24 hours.

Baking soda is a base; that's why it reacts with an acid such as vinegar and gets rid of heartburn, stomach acid.

Chemical properties of baking soda
Baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate or sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3,    ???

In order to prevent alkali from damaging your skin, use rubber gloves when you use baking soda.  ;D

Yes, this I know, but you said it was an acid. Just trying to find out if you meant to say base/alkaline substance instead of describing it as an acid. No offense intended, the same effect can be seen when you get certain bore cleaners on your brass; they turn green, and if you don't wipe them clean the brass may weaken as it's being broken down. KB's aren't fun!  No green brass for me. :o

Please carry on with the story. I'm most interested.

Have a pair of these pistols that someone has tried to blue and they have a very lovely shade of purple that I wish to get rid of.

Brush on some white vinegar on the areas you wish to lighten or remove the finish all together, but do not let it get onto the springs or the internal parts.  Disassembly is best.  Wash the vinegar off and dry well.  Then use 900 grit wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a popsicle stick to smooth any rough spots or further remove the finish.  Casey's Cold Blu will allow you to apply just the right amount of color you want.  Or you can just use the sand paper or emory cloth to polish the finish and get it back to blue.  I had to do all of this my self to a 58 that I bought from someone who "antiqued" it by dipping the whole gun in vinegar, and just about every spring had some degree of rust and pitting.

On the other hand, have these pistols been browned?  The initial result of browning, or plum brown, is a more maroon than purple, which you then apply oil and high grit sand paper to in order to get it back to an antique looking brownish color.  I had to done to my muzzle loader and until I sanded and lightened the color it was a deep maroon.

Hope this helps.

I used the wrong word, saying acid. Would sodium be refererred to as salt?
I think so, yes.

Also, don't use any wine vinegar, it'll stain brown. I tried it cause I mixed w/ white vinegar.. ???
I soaked the gun in white vinegar completley. Took a quart bottle. Guess I could of just brushed it on, and saved some vinegar for the salad... :'(
I just suggested brushing on the white vinegar as a means of slowly removing and lightening the color of the finish.  If you want to strip the frame and start over then soaking it it the way to go as long as you remember that the small nooks a spaces where the springs and hammer assemblies go are no longer blued as all, so you need to keep the lubed or protected in some way.

If you are open to suggestion................

Try filing the frame with the grips on it. Then blend back to there with sandpaper. You'd be surprised how fast this will work with a mill file. :P

Hey since your not gonna use the rammer (that you sent to me ;)) What about changing the angle of the lower front portion of the frame? I always thought that should have more taper or angle if there is no rammer (kind of a 45 degree angle instead of the 15 or so that it has stock). ???
