'Ivy League' adjustment belt

Ok, Looked at sutlers, looked through the archives found this name... what kind of buckles were used on these?

I ask because the double D rings on mine just don't stay cinched.

The 'D' -shaped buckle features twin prongs that actually penetrate the adjustment strap.

Go to your local fabric shop, and you should be able to find them.

"'Ivy League' adjustment belt" is that belt and buckle "thingie" on the back of the high-waisted trousers, it was often snugged-up tight - and preferred by those who didn't like suspenders.

It's called a "Buckle & Billet" in the sewing patterns from the era.

I know the buckles you mean, I've just never heard them called Ivy League before, it's certainly not a term we use in the Old world.

Neither have I & the wife has book cases full of books from the era & not one reference I've found to "Ivy League Adjustment Belt".

Well I have to say I am new to this era, and every bit o' knowledge does help. I am a little more familiar with clothing about 200 - 400 years previous.

So... Buckle and Billet? Buckles still commonly found at the sewing shops?

"Ivy league" was a clothing style in the 1950s in the States. Refers to the "Ivy League" colleges where it was (allegedly) first worn. It included a belt and buckle arrangement on the back of trousers...some were even functional...and (IIRC) straight legs, side seam pockets, and no cuffs.

In the late 1960's & early 1970's pants were made with small belts on the sides. Some had two buttons for adjustment, and some had a small buckle.

In the 1910's some pants had the same feature! All that I have have buckles. The pants on my WWI officers pants have them as well as two pair of civilian pants. Have no info on side belts pre 1900. The back belt is well documented and continued in use steadily into at least the 1930's by Levi for one. Only have one pair of these.

Not on any of my Originals.
The prongs are mounted on the Center Bar & Pivit up & down so that they can be moved out of the way so that one is able to adjust the Billet w/o interference from it.

Those are two full-sized buckles - the top from Colonial times - the bottom being a Confederate wartime issue.

The two prongs are as Sir Harry mentions, and as has already been mentioned - on a pivoting center bar.

The 'Ivy League' style of clothing was a late '50's - early '60's style of dress trouser then in vogue.

The style of adjustment buckle is also found on current Tuxedos and on Army high-waisted Dress Blue and Mess uniforms.

That it's referred to as 'Ivy League' is because that's how it's commonly known 'today', and when you go looking for them in a modern shop - the clerk will know what you're looking for.
