Our local 'Rope Burn City' CAS event is the 3rd Sunday after July. After that, my wife wants to make the trek through the Rockies to southern Alberta.

What shoots will be happening about that time?

PJ/Todd-
Greetings Pard!   ;D    It has just penetrated my foggy and creaky old mind (having noted the e-mail address in your profile) that we are already fairly well acquainted online through our mutual interest in Victorian-era British Empire militaria and weaponry!

I am a mite puzzled by the wording of your post .... but assume that your projected trip will occur after the third weekend in July?

If so, the biggest shoots in the appropriate time-frame would undoubtedly be:the two big matches held by the Alberta Frontier Shootists at the Rocky Mountain House Rod & Gun Club Range (which admittedly is more "central Alberta") on consecutive weekends -
- Shootout at The No-Way Corral (The 14th Canadian National Championship of CAS) - July 29, 30 & 31 2011
- Rocky Mountain Showdown (Sass Canadian National Championship, so I believe SASS membership is a prerequisite) -  Aug. 03, 04 & 05 2011
- greater detail available on their website - http://www.albertafrontiershootists.ca/ - (click on the "All Shoots" link in the left-hand sidebar.)

Note the registration deadlines for these events.  If you do plan to register for either of them, let me know, as I would then be keen on doing so also, so we could meet personally at last.  (I have been remiss in getting up to any of their shoots over the past several years.)

Not that you are likely to make it as far east as Medicine Hat, I suppose ..... but our monthly shoot for July is on the third weekend (Sunday, July 17) and then the following month is also on the third Sunday (August 21) .... which is undoubtedly too late.  It is possible that the Calgary group will be having a monthly shoot somewhat earlier in August (but undoubtedly no earlier than the 7th, or possibly the 14th ....  Perhaps someone will post more exact information in that regard.

Yep, c'est moi! The 'PJ' handle was inspired by the beautifully engraved script 'PH' on a '66 carbine I bought. It was too good not to take advantage of.
My previous handle 'Word Smith', frontier journalist, was 'retired' when he grew weary of Cariboo winters and returned to Victoria. Wimp ... ;>)

I have noted the dates you mentioned and referred them to 'Miz Josie', my social secretary cum trip organizer. She enjoys CAS as much if not more than I do, but shares my aversion of SASS. That precludes any events where SASS membership is requisite.

I am getting some local interest in the NCOWS style of smaller, harder-to-hit, furtheraway targets and have designed a two-gun stage that is being considered for our July shoot. We are aware that the 'Working Cowboy' class of NCOWS holds appeal for new shooters on limited budgets.

Todd:

I was long averse to SASS membership, but relented and re-joined a year or so ago to facilitate registration in some events in the States .....

Here at the Rocky Mountain Rangers, No. 4 Troop (.... we are nowhere near the Rocky Mountains, of course, but the connection is covered in detail on my website ....) we follow quite simplified rules, and do offer 'Working Cowboy' as a registration option ....

With your known interests, I must endeavour to interest you in the "Grand Army of the Frontier" - the 'mission' of which is "to honor the memories and achievements of the late Victorian-era military of all nations between 1858 and 1904, with a particular emphasis on American army on the Western Frontier between 1860 and 1900, though the pursuit and sharing of knowledge, and by actively participating in the hobbies of Cowboy Action Shooting, historical reenacting, living history programs, skirmishing, social events, and other activities while wearing appropriate military attire."

Membership is free, and if you wish to join it would bolster the meager ranks of the "Department of the International", of which I am the Commander ....  Perhaps I could even interest you in attending a shooting event, particularly their Annual "Grand Muster" .... albeit they can be located a fair distance away from the "Medicine Line" ... this past fall (and again this coming November) in Texas.  (So far, I am the only person from outside the USA who has attended ....)   Here I am competing in one of GAF's "Main Battle Rifle" categories, as a 1885 Rebellion Sergeant of the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada -

My pistol packin' wife and I will be in Southern Red Rose Country mid-July. Where do we find ranges for Calgary/Medicine Hat shoots?

I'm familiar with the terms CAS (Cowboy Action Shooting) and WAS (Western Action Shooting), but when did FAS (Frontier Action Shooting) come on line? Frontier Alcohol Syndrome?   Hmmmm, maybe not too far off the mark ...  ;>)

That's nice, but we won't be going to Rocky. That's why I asked about shoot dates in the Calgary/Medicine Hat area.

Got back yesterday (sunday) morning from 10 days in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada. Went there to shoot the CAS Canadian Championship and the SASS Canadian Championship.  Had a truely great time, shot two great matches and even got to see Cowboys and Alians with 75 friends at a local theater.

If you have some time here's a couple links to some picks

That is a great set of photos.  The AFS put on a good shoot.  I havn't shot ot Rocky but I did attend the Camrose venue 3 times and enjoyed myself immensely.  Was that a sergeant in The Legion of Frontiersmen, standing by a Russian Streltsy?

I believe the young sergeant is wearing the dress uniform of his  current unit.  He, or someone, told me it was based on the uniform of a early Alberta military/police force.  The guy wearing the kilt just retired form the Canadian Army and was waring his personal awards.

Sir Charles deMouton-Black

Could that have been The South Alberta Light Horse (SALH)?  That was my son's last Canadian unit.  The double gold stripe on the breaches indicates "Light Horse"
