Here's a pair of Hartford Armory '58 Rems for sale on Gunbroker.

A rare thing to see even one of these for sale...

in .44-40...with factory fitted 44 mag/44spl cylinders.

All 3 of your points are TRUE.  I would wait until USFA comes out with their Remingtons.  I am betting they will be better quality than the Hartfords.

Just a point "of order":  They are 1875 Remingtons, not '58s.  Hartford Armory never made any 58s.

And while IF you got a good one, it'd be hard to beat ... even by USFA ... that price seems pretty high, but maybe not with the extra cylinders.  One of the things I respected most about them is that they made them with the cylinder pin release in the ORIGINAL spot, not where Uberti puts them, now.  And the weird part is that Uberti STARTED (back in the late 60s or early 70s) with the pin release where it belonged, and then CHANGED it to the Colt type, where they are now!  :(

I'll reserve judgment on the USFA IF #1 it's an1875 and #2 the cylinder pin screw is where it belongs.

Jeff,

Good point on the 58s vs the 75.   I missed that in his original post.  Maybe you should write Gary Granger and tell him of your concern about the proper position of the cylinder pin screw.  For the amount of money I am anticipating they will charge for the 1875s it should be correct.   Regards.

Whoops,......I made a mistake and called them '58s in my opening post.

Steel Horse,......your concerns are well taken,...good point about that release pin position.

Seems it's about as rare to find an early Uberti, with it's period correct release pin,
as it is to see a Hartford Armory for sale.

Fellers, jist to let ya know, there ain't a thing in the world wrong with my 1875 Hartford Armory Remingtons. I do wish that I had bought a pair of 1890s when I got the 75s so that I would have some of each.

10 Sleep, Howdy!

No offense meant - obviously you got some of the good ones.  I never had heard about H.A. offering any '90s.  I was saving my pennies for one because I had seen some details about them, when a pard told me a horror story about his pair and since then, I've heard both ways.  About 50% of the ones I've heard about are all they were meant to be - the rest seemed to be VERY expensive problems.  Then the company quit making them - which is a darn shame, because of the people involved, who used to visit "here" from time to time.  The whole thing is truly a shame, 'cause the example I saw was as close to perfection in a handgun as I've ever seen!  Absolutely NO machining marks I could find - inside or out!  And the idea of a '75 Remington that was fully safe to fire HOT-HOT-HOT 44 mag or 45 Colt hunting ammo is really appealing!

Anyway, 'Sleep, I envy yours!  ;)

Don, the one I saw would be a hard act to follow, even by USFA!  Even IF they do make one as fine as I think they will, I doubt the USFA will be able to withstand the chamber pressures that the H.A. versions were built to take.

My cousin has  pair of Hartfords he really loves. No problems or complaints on anything about them. Mine were just the opposite. I feel it unfortunate that they stopped production. They could have corrected their quality control and sold quite a few of them. They probably lost money on the project or we would be seeing them still available.

I am waiting to see what the USFA's are like. I will certainly pick up a couple as long as they're up to the quality I see in their SAA's and if everything is historically correct about them.

I'm w/ Deadeye Don on this: wait for the USFA Remington as it will have the name REMINGTON on it. FWIW these WILL have the correct cylinder retainer at the end of the web. How do I know? I asked Mark Roberts at USFA and they reverse engineered an original.  ;D ;)  The Hartford Armory differed from the originals in one respect: the cylinders are 0.125" (1/8") longer than originals.

I'm assuming that is like Uberti: so the USFA guns can handle 45 Colt, 44-40 or perhaps 44 spl. and perhaps 357?

The Hartford's are great..best made pistols i've seen in a long time..spectacular even.. My pair of HA  44' s are superb
Rumor has it Hartford Armory may begin making the 75's again in '08 after suspending production due to gov't contracts escalated due to the War...Don't hold your breath waiting for  USFA Remmies! It'll be  a whille ...a looooong while and a USFA Rem wil be very expensive..close to a $2K MSRP I'd bet..I'm a USFA dealer and have other USFA guns backordered for over 3 years now! USFA has some great ideas for guns..but take forever, if ever, getting them from concept to production..

I wonder if Gary Granger would care to comment on this information.

I e-mailed the seller of these Hartford Armorys and asked if he could send me some better pictures. I haven't the money to buy these right now, but I thought it was a good opportunity to get a better look (through pictures) of the renowned Hartfords.  He gladly sent me some pictures, and I asked & got his permission to put them up over here's so's everyone could see them, just in case someone was interested. I have no connection with this seller,.....just wanted to share this info with other Remington lovers who may want to take advantage of a rare opportunity to own a pair of Hartford Armory Rems.

here's the pics......he said he's not a pro at taking pics, and the high polish of the fine bluing created a glare with the flash on some, but these are better pics than you see on the Gunbroker auction. If you click on the pic once it loads to your screen,...it will get even more larger.

As I say, I am not connected or affiliated with the seller in any way,...just wanted to pass on this info in case another Remington lover might want these. They sure are mighty fine lookin! He says if they don't sell he'll keep them for awhile, and in fact  is becoming fond of them himself.
Ha! Them Hartfords are castin a spell on him,... ;)
