Both of My GG fathers on my Mom's side of the family were in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.

Yup..every Southerner knows that ship was renamed the CSS Virginia when she became an Ironside.  She was the  U.S.S. Merrimack when she was a Union ship. The fact that the battle at Hampton Roads is often called the battle of "the Merrimack and the Monitor" rather than "the Virginia and the Monitor" is probably because much of the press coverage (and history) was by Union newspapers and magazines who, along with the Union military, may have knowingly continued to use the prior name of the ship rather than her proper name. Throughout the Official Records, Federal sources referred to the ship as the "Merrimack" while Confederate sources refer to her as the "Virginia."

I tend to agree with the misinformation. Tell ya though, there were a lot of people down here highly pissed when the 'Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel' was named. They spelled Merrimack improperly anyway.

An important piece of Naval History for both sides. Texas had its own Navy before it was a state.
