OK, I'm considering picking up a pair of the Uberti 1858 factory conversions in 45 Colt to replace my BP guns with the drop-in cylinders. I know they've been out long enough for some of you to buy them and try them out.

Anyone know what the bore diameter is on these guns?

How do they shoot?

How dependable are they?

Are the front sights dovetailed in?

Any other noteworthy bits of information about them that isn't in the advertising?

Many thanks for any information you can provide.

I would also like to know if they actually made these Remington conversions this way back in the day or is this a fancy Uberti creation?

Why, whatever do you mean? ;D

Quote from: Barbarosa on December 01, 2007, 03:44:21 PMMy question is..? Why didn't they make the forged frame for these conversions instead of steel?
I thought they were the forged frames. Is this another thing I need to know?

I do believe the forged frame was made by Uberti specifically for the "Conversion", or because of it.  A forged frame is also now sold as a cap & ball gun, you can buy either cast or forged.  The frame window is larger on the forged frame because the conversion cylinder Uberti makes is larger in diameter than R&D or Kirst, and the hole centers are greater than the cast frame cylinder and the R&D or Kirst.

Since the bore is higher than the cast frame, the cylinders will not interchange, from what I understand.

The bore most likely is a more standard 45 bore than the cap & ball, but I haven't seen one to check the dimensions of.

Thanks, Flint, that seems to go along with what I thought they did.

I have a pair of 7 3/8 in 38 special. I've had them since June and like them a lot. Very accurate right out of the box with good fit and finish. They draw some attention from other shooters at matches. I've had no problems with dependability. I'm a new shooter in the sport so I can't compare to others but I'm very satisfied with mine.

Thanks, Ben. I appreciate the input.

Well, Barbarosa, you're right about their ad. I can see I'll need to call them next week to see what the story is. Thanks, again.

Anyone know what the bore diameter is on these guns? = .451

How do they shoot? - Mine is a joy to shoot, POA with Black Hills  45 Sch.
I got mine from Tuolumne Lawman ( the one he did the Chronicle article on ) I suspect he may have adjusted the front sight... otherwise it was
set just right for me at the factory.

How dependable are they?  , Not problem 0, JIP in over 300 rounds.. I did lose the tiny screw that holds the ejector retaining spring (but not the spring) one email to Susanne Webb at Uberti and she sent me 3 at NO cost from Italy  ;D
I think it was lost in shipping from TL.....

Are the front sights dovetailed in? Yes sir

Any other noteworthy bits of information about them that isn't in the advertising?
I hated the reddish finish grips... but a little stripper and steal wool and they revealed nice walnut grips..
I'm very please with it and can't fault Customer service a Uberti.

And it is forged Steel .... Direct comment from Uberti

would I buy another, perhaps ... well , I'm a Colt Conversion fan.... but any conversion is of high interest ,so I grabbed this one.
I pair with my 72 OT. and sometimes my Colt with an R&D Cylinder.
However, I only pair my to Type 1 Richards with each other...and never with the others.

Is the 58 Rem Conv- Forged or Steel...? ???
I believe Major2 is right here :o
It is my belief that the forged frame came about as a direct result of needing a larger window so the cylinder could be enlarged to contain the 44-40 and slightly smaller (rim size) 45 Colt. It is a plus that they are offering this in the BP version as well! I believe that the reason the ad that barbarosa linked to says steel is to differintiate beween brass and steel (since that's how their advertising always was before) :-\

My question is, who has these in stock? I have had a pair orerded at my local dealer for a year now. He calls Cimarron every month or so, and they keep saying in another month or two. I checked with Taylors and they do not have any either.

If anyone knows of a pair that are available, let me know.

"they keep saying in another month or two"

That's Cimarron' standard answer , I got that from same reply from Feb, 06 to Apr. 07 when Marcy quit answering my emails about the Type 2 Conversion.
Truth is....they have no idea until they have the shipping manifest.

I know a dealer were a 38 Cal. 5 1/2" is for sale....and a like new 45 cal. 7 1/2"

Otherwise , I'd keep in touch with Sue or Tammy at Taylor's or maybe Buffalo Arms...
