Floyd,
Coffinmaker did  both of mine he's the Meistro of the 73 if you ask me. I got the Cowboys & Indians 3rd Generation, theres a fourth generation but it requires replacing the original lever, and this causes a signifigant jump in price, over a $100 more bucks for that kit. JB

Pioneer Gunworks. I've put a few of them in and they work flawlessly. The installation is easier than any others I've seen. You don't have to modify any of your original parts, either.

The kit includes a new carrier lever and a pair of toggle links. Everything else stays original and you can put your gun back to original by simply switching the parts back.

Well ........ There are actually three manufactures of Short Stroke Kits.  Cowboys and indian Store in California has two versions of their kits.  Third generation and fourth generation.  The third generation is perhaps the most common and does not require the replacement of the lever.  Their "fourth" generation requires replacement of the lever and results in a very short stroke.
Pioneer Gunworks has two versions of the short stroke kit, neither requires replacement of the lever.  One is the equivalent of the C & I third generation and then there is the "super short stroke" which is approximately the same lever throw as the C & I fourth generation.
The absolute "Rolls Royce" of kits is made by Ron Snover "The Ottaway Smith" in Tennessee.  His kits are also caliber specific, eg: .38 and .45.  Fit and finish is superb.
the third generation kits run around $150 - $160 and the C & I fourth generation (lever included) is about $275.  The C & I "special" and Pioneer Gunworks "Super Short Stroke" result in the minimum allowable lever throw of about 4 1/4 inch total throw.  Very short.
ALL of the kits are easy to install.  There is an important point though.  Depending on the rifle, there is about 3 1/2 to 5 hours work needed in the action to prepare the rifle for the kit.  All the springs have to be tuned and the inside friction areas need to be polished.  Without at least the spring work, you wind up with a rifle with a really short lever throw that takes two men and a large boy to operate.  Not real user friendly.
Consider having one of the dozen or so of us do the work for you.  I don't work my mail but depending on where you are, I can make recommendations.

There's a great gunsmith, shooter and all-around person who goes by the alias "Lassiter."  I'm sorry that I have no other name or contact info, but he shoots here a lot:

Contact C. Bubba McCoy and he might be able to steer you in the right direction.

Yep, Lassiter's in Ohio and a great pard to have work on your guns.  His phone number is 937-687-1039.

ABOYNAMED SUE

I know this will sound dumb, but how do I get the side plates off a '73 rifle after removing the scew from the left side plate?

Major E A Sterner

You thread the screw partway beck in and GENTLY tap on it to loosen the side plate, You then can tap the other side off from the side you have removed

I put a Pioneer Kit in my '66.  Also a set of his Slixsprings (came with simple instruction on fitting them) an a reduced power main spring from The Smith Shop.  Everything works great and I have not yet smoothed any of the internals.  Hopefully I'll will have time this week to pull it down and clean up the action and expect it to run like butter after that.
